20ga hulls

Recommended Posts

I have noticed that lately any 20ga once fired chedite or fiocchi hulls are pin holed or spliting along the fold lines, and are less than perfect to crimp because of this, I never noticed this a few years ago i would say about the past four years they have got steadily worse in quality.
Rio/ saga dont seem bad and are basicaly the same as fiocchi as far as i know. Anybody else noticing once fired hulls splitting in the way i discribe?

Arnt eley rio saga and fiocchi the same case design. ?

I did wonder if because i got most of my hulls from the same lad if his gun was somehow a little large in the chamber and this was the reason cases seemed to split pin hole on the folds, many are complete on the folds at the case mouth its right at the lower part of the fold, the flaws show up worse. Crimps are fine on some lighter loads with the hulls in this state but if the load is a little tight it can compromise the integity of the crimp om occasion.

What are good makes of hulls to look out for in 20ga.

Sits!

I noticed this in Remmy cases too

Recently I reloaded a batch and quite a few had split, leaving rather messy crimps

I tend to pick up Lyalvale branded cases mostly because that is what I find in the bins and it's strange how one week a particular case is just perfect for reuse and the next week where someone else has been shooting the same case it has splits in the crimp lines and so isn't worth picking up.

I've often wondered if using the same shells in different guns make any difference?

Differing chamber sizes; the plastic exceeds its elasticity, I reckon.

I do think its the chamber bores on some guns, it can be a lotery though especialy if you are trying to gather up enough cases to load a decent ammount of the same case type. I seldom get issues with 12s its the 20s i seem to come accros where the problem lays.

I found quite a few of the gamebore clear pigeon( the newer black cases 68.9mm) very thin (shived?) and split. I dug out some old empties and amongst them were some of the olc"clear" clear pigeon cases. (67.2mm) They have a much thicker plastic at the crimp end and crimp beautifully. Both were fired through the same gun of mine.

most newer cases are getting thinner and thinner.

its just the hull manufacturers reducing and reducing the plastic polymer content of the hulls, they are not interested in the reloadability, they want cheap.

i`ve noticed over the years the hulls have got thinner, maybe not in actual thickness, but certainly density of plastic.

thats why i have started using primed virgin hulls, from a certain reloading vendor.

the basewads of the fiocchi have changed too, not like a solid cake-wad anymore, more of a plastic cup.
