Michaeli
Hi Guys I’m going to be hopefully applying for my FAC shortly so I was wondering what caliber I should apply for. This is what I’m after / looking at doing in the next 5 years. Rabbit / vermin shooting, I would like something that is good for close and long range (100-150 yards) Fox shooting Deer staking Target shooting (hopefully use the same as the rabbit but might get a dedicated rifle) Thanks Michael
al4x
.17hmr Long range vermin / rabbits .243 Fox and deer 308 large deer / target shooting by the sounds of it
Michaeli
.17hmr Long range vermin / rabbits .243 Fox and deer 308 large deer / target shooting by the sounds of it Sounds good to me. Is the .17hmr good for close range as well or is it worth adding a .22 aswell for both vermin and target? Also what distance does a 308 go too? The shooting club uses a M.O.D range once a month an can go up to 600 meters. Thanks Michael
al4x
the hmr is fine close up but you can go for a .22 as well but its an expensive game too many different guns by the time you factor in gun, scope, moderator etc .308 will be fine to that range
Michaeli
Thanks for that. I will look into those calibers. I was only thinking about the .22 for targets as some one said .17hmr rounds are quite expensive for paper popping but then again i might just use the .308 for tagets at all ranges. Thanks Michael
lewis2012
The hmr is £11 for 50 hornady v-max and will shoot flat from 0 - 120 yds with a 100yard zero. If your worried about paying £11 for 50 wwhat about the 308? 20 hornady superformance 53grain in 223 are £24. I haven't got a 308 but a mate has but reloads his own but I would imagine its gonna cost you around £30 for 20 factory rounds of 308. I usually use privi partizan in .223 and they're £55 for 100 so half the price but group nicely in my A-Bolt so that's why I tend to stick to them. Thanks Michael You may just find that more expensive than HMR , but the fact is HMR is NOT a target round, even though FMJ are available, it is a Vermin round! .22lr is very common and inexpensive to run for target, but you need to be a bit closer than 600 yards! Underdog
Why not just get a 22 and a full bore for now? U.

Michaeli
Hi guys, Looking into this and chatting to a friend and a RFD I think I’m going to put down .17 HMR with Mod for long range vermin (like this rifle for its flat 0 to 120 yards as said above, main reason I want one) .22 with Mod for vermin and targets (more so for targets) .243 with Mod for Fox and Deer I’m going to leave the .308 as if I want to do long range target shooting I will use the clubs and I wont be doing massive amounts of deer shooting so don’t need the bigger round. I think the above should give me a good range of calibers for what I will be shooting and hopefully my FEO wont see it as asking for two much. As I’m still new to this how long do I have to fill my spaces? Or is a case of when I next come to renew if I don’t have that calibre anymore they will remove it? Thanks Michael

Thanks Michael There is no legislation on this, and some regions make up their own rules. The fact is, 5 years down the line if you have not filled a slot you have, then you may have some issue persuading them you have a requirement for it! Michaeli
That's what I thought the case might be. The above, I think are the calibers I'm going to use and anything else I want I will add at a later date. Thanks Michael
bullet boy
Michael,I think you will make a good choice with .22LR and .17HMR for Vermin and Target and .243 for Fox and Deer. ATB.

Michaeli
Super, I defiantly under estimated the amounts Thanks Michael
Dekers
Under estimate all you like, it's still down to your region to decide what you get, and "generally" they are not in the habit of handing out large holdings to new FAC owners? Put in the numbers by all means, and have an answer ready in case they ask why. ATB!
