To DEET or not to DEET

I was following the post on insect repellents and thought I would have a google at DEET as I recall a flap a few years ago about applying it to children. Canada has outlawed certain DEET products that have higher concentrations of the chemical.

DEET is related chemically to Toluene, an organic solvent that is used in paint removers and nail polish. It is absorbed through the skin and impairs muscle coordination, which would give me cause to reconsider if I were competing in any athletic event including shooting. When combined with alcohol as it is in many commercial sprays the absorption is increased.

Skin so soft and other herbal products are effective but may need to be reapplied more often. I have used mint leaves and a product called Buggins that has Peppermint oil, Lemon grass oil and Clove oil, seems to work pretty well and smells decent- not at all feminine.

Damn it! I spent the whole summer in 1996 playing golf in Canada covered in 95% DEET. No wonder.................

the new skin so soft doesnae work for me any more :|

When i was in NZ recently i was down white baiting in Foirdland which was moving with sand flies, a slightly bigger version of a midge but bites are worse. They used a 50/50 mix of Detol and Baby oil and it worked pretty well althou u had to apply it fairly often.

Has anyone heard of this or tried that here? Thinking about having a go with it this year

What ever you do don't buy/use army issue insect repellent. Not only does it not work it can melt some types of plastic!

Maybe it has Toluene as well? Some plastics are not impervious to solvents.

Makes a good excuse!! I couldn't golf with or without deet.
