team tractor
At work today we were chatting about 17 or 20 gr and why would i use the 20 gr tip ? I have had no problem killing anything with the 17gr so what's the benefits? Surely 20gr will fall short at range ?,cost more? Before anyone says its better for fox my feo won't allow me to shoot fox with the hmr plus as we know its not a dedicated fox caliber so surely that can't be the reason its made .( I know its capable before anyone starts )
matone
20gr are a little more authoritive on hares at range I`ve found. Edited June 7, 2013 by matone
RAMMER BURT
dont think 20g balisticly is any better than standard 17g i have looked into this and is not better but does cost more i only shoot rabbits so i just stuck to 17g
funkey monkey
They seem to be more accurate in my rifle. . Although .17 grain are acceptable.
Dekers
Get what you need for what you do, for some that may be a 20g version, for the majority of situations the HMR excels with the 17g V-Max type.

Would agree with that too. It`ll just be down to individual barrels no doubt. Edited June 8, 2013 by matone
welsh1
The 17grain have the fragment able head, although you can also get hollow point,so they tend to cause massive trauma on impact, the 20grain usually come in hollow point so tend to penetrate deeper holding their shape ending in the mushroom shape we all know. Some argue that on fox the deeper penetration and heavier hit is more effective, but a lot experience the round going straight through if it only hits soft tissue. Personally the 17grain is very effective and imparts its energy very effectively ,on fox I have found them to do the job the only one who might complain is the fox. benn
i belive its an soft point or fmj rather than a hollow point.

Have a look here http://www.cci-ammunition.com/products/products.aspx for a decent selection of HMR which includes different weights and types, inc. HP! fieldwanderer
I tried the 20gr gamepoints quite a while ago and found they were terrible against anything smaller than a hare - just go straight through. They do this 50/50 with hares too. I stuck with the 17gr vmax
