Hi Guys,

Has anyone done any foreshore shooting on Islay ? I know that most of the geese that visit the island are Barnacles or White front and cant be taken without a licence but what about Pinks & Greys.

We, (me & the WFW) are going over on a short break in September and I am thinking is it worth me taking my gun. I have had a look at the various estates and they offer Woodcock & Ducks and other shooting but I cant see anything on the foreshore. Do the same laws apply on Islay as the Orkneys regarding foreshore shooting.

Any thoughts ?

cheers

Used to go to Islay a lot years ago, amazing place and good crack in the pubs. I thought Orkney and maybe Shetland were unique with the Udal law foreshore thing but maybe not,it'll be interesting to know the rights. BBL if you like a glass o whisky you've got to go there! HP.

Cheers HP,

We went over almost 20 years ago for a couple of holidays and we always said that we should go back but up till now havent done so. Yes I do like a dram or two and I will be doing the tourist bit and visiting a couple of distilleries.

When we had a our previous holidays I had no intrest in shooting but at the time, it was late September was amazed at the geese. Now that I partake in the odd visit to the foreshore I thought I might take my gun with me.

We had a break last year in the Orkneys and I had a good couple of outings with Rob Frampton. I have been looking on the web for goose guides on Islay but as yet cannot find any. I have also been in touch with a couple of estates but thay are mostly shooting woodcock from October and have been asking extortionate prices for a full day. I will post my findings for any others to look at.

Udel Law is the old Norwegian or Norse law which still apply here in Orkney & Shetland & its an odd thing ! but that's the way it is here , as for the history of it well Orkney & Shetland use to be possessions of Norway & they were put up as a dowry by the king of Norway when his daughter married the then King of Scotland , starting to get a little complicated ??? . Well the dowry was never paid by Norway so the northern Isles became the possession of Scotland but some Norwegians say that if the dowry is paid today plus the interest then Orkney & Shetland should be returned to Norway along with most of the oil & gas & fishing rights !! .

PSSST ! Don't tell the new young pretender ( King Alex ) it really pee's him off !:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Anyway there is very little shootable foreshore up here .
