JDog
Only on the condition that the landowner arranged to send his 'keeper and his pack of Labradors to help pick up did I head off to the peas this evening. I could not get there until 5pm and I asked a friend along on the condition that he got there early and watched, decided on the flight lines in and chose the hide positions in advance of my arrival. To be fair he was on a hiding to nothing as there were at least five lines in to four different fields and he had not made a decision by the time I arrived. I couldn't make my mind up either and we prevaricated until 5:30. I made the decision to shoot along a wall with the wind blowing down it. One of us would be able to shoot every bird on the line but in these circumstances we take it in turns from separate hides. It was amazing just how close the birds came to my hide when I was letting them pass. We had two rotaries 4m apart infront of the other hide so that the birds would be drawn beyond my hide position. Half way through the session we were joined by the landowners son aged 18. He was wearing the most scruffy pair of trainers I have ever seen which a tramp would refuse to wear, cut off track suit bottoms which had seen better days, a t shirt which he must have worn for weeks without washing it, a scruffy jacket and the only redeeming feature a decent flat cap. This is a boy who has just left Harrow School and a £30000/year education. However I digress. The birds decoyed well and in taking it in turns we shot virtually the same number of birds over two and a half hours. The teenager armed with a side by side 20 bore shot pretty well considering. We had 88 birds on the two clickers and having called up the 'keeper and his six dogs we managed to pick almost all of them.
