ack-ack
Decided to give the RXM a spruce up over the weekend as it looked a bit manky. Dropped off the hitch assembly and found a chuffing split running horizontally between the captive nuts and a split beneath that was concealed with crud. Further probing and ten minutes later half the chassis was on the drive in granular form and I had a hole the size of a letter box on the underside of the RXM. Pants!!! I cant believe that landrover have not managed to engineer out the crud traps on their RXMs. The drain holes beneath are tiny and the thing just sits permanently full of matter. Pah!!!! I could bodge it up but it needs to tow so the only option is a replacement RXM. Couple of questions: Can this be done with the body in place? Who produces the best replacement units? What would I be looking at all-in for this? Cheers, Rob

landy george
I've got a mate on canvey island that makes bitz & bobs for land rover's, you won't be disappointed with the stuff me makes. Google blacksheepoffroad.co.uk If you're still not covinced do a search on landyzone for comments on his work, his user name is pressbrake. This is not an advert for him/his website just pointing you in the right direction who is very good at his work.

Cheers, Rob Yes it can be done with tub still in place. Pressbrake or on ebay as 177flump. Think it's about £250 & a cup of tea. stokie
I did my last one with the tub in place but found it much easier to remove the tub floor then rivit it back in place after . There are two different types the easiest is to get the one with the slip over arms welded on . The other is just the rear beam and means the old one has to be cut off perfectly clean and square
mick miller
Did mine without removing the tub, just removed the bolts and jacked it up. I can recommend the mib heavy duty rxm. But, I had mine shot blasted and zinc coated before I resprayed it. Won't ever rust out again! Edited July 17, 2013 by mick miller
Sx3 clay breaker
I'm replacing mine at the mo with the tub on but I'm regretting not getting the extended one because I've had to rebuild the chassis back up with 5 mm plate so it ent going no where
landy george
The pressbrake one I've got on mine is made of 6mm & he makes the extensions as well. The rest of the chassis will fall apart but the crossmember will still be in one piece.
ack-ack
Cheers for your replies gents. It looks like a bit of a *******. Given the cost I'll cut out the rot and drop in a repair section as it looks like about a grand for a pukka replacement job. In the mean time I'll not hang anything stupid on the back. Its one on the list for 2014! The design of the factory RXM is utter utter pants. It could easily have been made from heavier guage steel and had decent drain holes in the bottom so that crud could find its own way out under gravity with the spray from the back wheels

For a grand, I'd want a galvanished chassis I won't tow anything with something that is just patched up. I use mine off road a lot & wouldn't want a big lump of metal come flighting at me but it's your call.

I have a Pressbrake crossmember on my defender and it is the best land rover related purchase I have ever made. Clive, the chap who makes and fits them is a proper craftsman who really knows his stuff. He makes them without the usual water and mud traps that the original design has which makes it far better. It is also a lot stronger. I am not often so vocal about a supplier and product but this really is worth it. Regards. T

I'd just like to see him still in business for next time I need something like a roll cage.
keg
Mine is coming up to needing doing and as several of you have mentioned, the version with the "flaps" fits well. No need to remove the tub. Ben quoted 350 to supply and fit.
