Gully
Actually, something not commonly known is that when the Argies were demolishing our fleet with Exocets, Pinochet allowed the SAS to set up a base at Punto Arenas and launch commando raids into Argetnina to destroy Argie planes on teh ground. Thatcher always thought that this action was the single biggest contribution to saving the British Fleet. It was all a bit hush-hush at the time. Without Chile we'd have lost the Falklands. He was no angel but you can see why Thatcher (and subsequently Blair and Straw) stuck up for him - because her saved her too.
pin
This is all as maybe, but he was a violent evil dictator responsible for the deaths of thousands and the torture of hundreds. Probably no worse than what we are up to at the moment, though.

Gully
Pin, I agree. I think the guy was a viscious b****** too and fits nicely alongside Saddam and Milosevic et al. The west always turned a blind eye to it as he kept the communists from power and they didn't want another Cuba in the region. He has a lot of blood on his hands but most people don't realise why Thatcher & Blair stuck up for him. Another interesting point from the Falklands is that people know that most of the Argentinian military hardware was French. How many know that Mitterand went out of his way to make planes and kit available for our boys to practice against.
pin
Gully: yep. We stood by and allowed most of this to carry on because it got rid of yet another socialist government which at the time, in context, really suited our purpose (for "our" read whatever the yanks want). Rabid Bunny: LOL
henry d
Spot on Gully During the conflict the SAS information was both accurate and swift and at the time we were not aware of where they got in from but as you said it was from Chile. As for the French "connection" least said soonest mended. I`m well aware that it wasn`t just french munitions that were used against us,the 1000lb bombs, and possibly(probably)others were british made The Argentinians also had British Type 42 destroyers that were kitted out and worked up in the UK up until a few months before However I`m sure has a red hot poker up his **** as we speak. Mungler
That's the problem with politics, you may not like them and in fact you may hate them, but how does the saying go, my enemy's enemy is my friend. As has been noted, most of the people we end up rucking with were the one we were selling arms to not that long ago. It's a funny old game. SNAKEBITE
Changing winds and all that. Remember when Saddam was our friend?, half a dozen or so African dictators were being trained at Sandhurst? The list goes on and to be honest coming from the country that invented concentration camps (Winston Churchill had the honour in the Boer war) I don't think anyone should shout too loudly about Human rights............ However what I do know is that anyone not standing behind our armed services and supporting them, whether or not you agree with the politics should be given a public kicking. We have it easy tucked up nicely in Blighty, looking forward to Xmas with all it's trimmings. Have a thought for the lad's and lasses in some God forsaken foxhole in the middle of the desert. Puts it into perspective doesn't it?
