Chr15j
I'm about to buy a used .17 HMR and I want to shorten the barrel. I already have a cz .22 with a 16" barrel and hmrs come with a 16" barrel but what I want to know is legal and practical minimum length I can have it cut down to? I know I will loose a little velocity but I doubt it's enough to matter I'm more int in accuracy and point ability. Also whilst I'm at it what about chopping down my .22 again practical length? Thanks chaps
wymberley
Just looked into this for a mate. A 14" LR will give the advertised bullet velocity, certainly for the Subsonic version. An HMR of the same length will drop the advertised velocity by a shade under 100 ft/sec. (Both are legal, Anschutz and Weihrauch respectively, manufacture to those lengths. welshwarrior
12.5" is very useable in a 22lr with subs never had a rabbit complain yet. 17HMR I prefer 16" but I don't use it in the jeep.
mickmep
pretty sure if you read the blurb that the cz hmr barrel is choked, so may not be the best idea to get one of those cut down. i'm sure some on here have said they've done it with cz's and no noticable difference in accuracy. from what i read before buying mine 16" is optimum for a .17hmr, with 14" they burn the mod out, but again people will say they've 14" hmr's that dont. personally went for 18" anschutz, the barrels not choked so i can get it cut to 16" if i feel like it later, but bought an over barrel mod which brings the overall length down a bit. for .22lr, in my opinion the accuracy will depends on quality of the barrel, mine has a 12.5" volquartsen barrel and doesn't suffer from any lack of accuracy. makes a very compact rifle. telf
i had an annie 1517 hmr with 14"barrel and didnt notice any loss in power or accuracy, but if i were to get another one i would get the 18" and have it chopped to 16"
dadioles
i had an annie 1517 hmr with 14"barrel and didnt notice any loss in power or accuracy, but if i were to get another one i would get the 18" and have it chopped to 16" Why? I too have an Anschutz with factory 14" barrel and cannot fault it. There is not much barrel sticking out beyond the stock so that is perfect for a moderator that screws onto the end (such as SAK). Dave had to modify his DM80 overbarrel moderator slightly as that is what I wanted for my rifle but that is not an issue. It just seems illogical to get an 18" and chop it to 16" when you can buy a factory 14". What have I missed?
telf
you havent missed anything,as i said i had the hmr with 14" barrel and also a modified dm80 mod,i think it was something i read that said 16"was the optimum length for an hmr, also frank dyke who were the main importer at the time told me that they did not stock that length as it wasnt as accurate as the 18" barrel and it has just stuck in my mind,as i said i couldnt fault the 14" barrel, possibly having had the 14" would just like to try one with 16"or 18"(if i was going to get another one, which in the forseable future i am not)
