jgguinness
Hi all. Whilst Mrs G is on night shifts I have decided to have a go at refinishing the stock on an unloved Aramberri that I have. I've stripped the old finish off the stock using wire wool, steamed the small dents out and lightly sanded some scratches out. What would you folks recommend as a refinish? Also,, the chequering is very worn, and in places a distant memory. Do I need specialist tools to try and rectify, is there a DIY cheat or shall I just leave it? Kind regards Jonathan
welshwarrior
You need chequering tool to recut that For the finish use a good stock oil trade secret or napier are good I'm told Philips is as well but if never tried it. Avoid tru oil it's not a proper oil and has no place on a gun IMHO.
jgguinness
Any idea how much it would cost to have it recut?
Bewsher500
you can often get brownells tools second hand on US eBay or borrow one I just recut a rifle stock go slowly!! very easy to cut new lines! its very therapeutic and transforms the feel of the gun as the lines are already there it is easier then cutting from scratch Phillips walnut oil is very good. cheap at £7 a bottle, I have restored maybe 5 or 6 stocks and still have 1/3 of a bottle
jgguinness
Ah cheers Bewsher, thanks for the heads up on the walnut oil. Any chance of a pic or two of what a stock that you have done looks like when using this product? Will have a look on eBay tonight too for some tools. gazbev
CCL traditional gunstock finishing kit is the only one I have used and if followed to the letter gives a fantastic finish but no quick results with this it took me weeks to finish it properly, really pleased with the result. It finishes the stock with a high gloss finish which can be polished back for a matte finish which is what I did. Some other finishes make the stock a red colour which I didn't like. Good luck,I enjoyed it hope you do. I have now attached some photos, the first is the finished stock, the grain is easier to see than before because of the wetting and taking back with wire wool, nothing at all has been put on the chequering. The first is the stock before, I know it's not a nice piece of wood but its much better with the varnish off and oiled I think. It's still a bit shiney for me so I will take it back again with the cleaning and polishing compound that comes with the kit ( I think it's brasso) Edited August 21, 2013 by gazbev
