Decoying Crows.

Just picked up my first permission, at this time of year there seems to be very few pigeons around but loads of crows.

Is there any major differences between the two as far as decoying goes, read loads on pigeons.

I don't own anything in the way of setup yet, aiming to do that in the next few weeks. So any advice on what to buy and where the best place to get it from would be very helpful.

i have used and still own shells, full body and fuds but without dought the best by a country mile is the sillosocks and you can fit 40 of them in your rucksack :good: .

so now i only use sillosocks they stand out from miles away and are brilliant for getting them in.

as far as patterns are concerned i just put the decoys out in a very random pattern and add the dead birds to the pattern as they are shot.

i dont leave dead birds out without laying them out properly.

if you look at my crow shooting videos in the shooting video section you will see it works really well.

cheers

I use full body and shell flocked decoys. As above, I place them in a random pattern, leaving approx 3ft between each bird, and all facing towards or sideways into the wind. All dead birds are used as decoys, by placing some bamboo cane from their rear end into the head, and the rest of the cane inserted into the ground. One of the best bits of kit that I use is the Primos Power Crow caller.

The callers are easy to use, but you need to practice with them to get the best results. You can usually get them from most RFD's, although they are a bit scarce on the ground at the moment. I use my caller to attract Crow's, Jackdaw's and Rooks. There is a caller on the market called an ACME Crow caller, but this is more suited to calling in Jackdaw's.

Just put your hide against a good background, stick out your deeks any old how facing all ways. Furthest out i put mine are 15 paces max, don't move a inch till in range then blast them.

Its your movement that gives you away. :good: i hardly ever use a caller and i shoot a few. . atb Terry

i must admit i took my nephew out with me one day and the birds were not to keen on coming in so we started using my crow caller and it really did work.

we were in front of a line of trees and as soon as i used the crow caller one or two poked there head over the top to investigate not just once but nearly every time we did it.

i use one of the SN crow callers i got the crow and jackdaw callers from him.

i cant make the same noise he can either i am pretty useless at it but it still works.

i was quite amazed they actually worked.

i always use the crows i shoot as decoys i usually lay them out with the wings speed as wide as i can get them i know every day is different but generally it works believe it or not even when its foggy.

However, by using the caller, you attract crows you can not even see. On some of the open moorland I shoot, they come for miles, way before you spot them.

are the crow calls worth useing on open moorland? i have 100s of acres of open moor land that i never shoot..must give it a try if it works..

I have access to a shoot on Bodmin moor. You can see the crows come low over the hedges and looking for the call for miles!
