malkiserow
Not sure of this one... I bought a rifle (.22 rim fire) with a moderator on it which turned out to be for an air rifle which I only found out when it started to break up a long time after I bought it. So my question is now, can I hand in that duff moderator (which is on my ticket) to the police and keep that slot without paying for another slot? Anyone done this? Andy H
Yes it's just a free one for one variation.
Scully
It's just a 1 for 1 variation, though I doubt the Police will want it.Just hand it to your local RFD. Andy H beat me to it. Edited August 22, 2013 by Scully

Andy H beat me to it. Hence the question. An RFD will take it but then I have to run around with the paperwork and purchase another in a given time.... I just don't want to to lose my slot as I am not purchasing a new moderator just yet. I am guessing the RFD needs to do paperwork as it is still classed as a firearm so there may be a cost especially if I am not buying a new one. The duff Moderator has no insides at all.... it is just a tiny aluminum tube with a thread one end! Someone else on here the other day, possibly Henry d?, handed in bullets directly to the police and this got me thinking about how to deal with this scrap moderator. If I am doing a variation anyway, I would like to have a go at requesting my licence be opened up on my .243 so this might be a good time to ask and put my paperwork in? It's been closed for 3 years on my .243 but open on rim fires for 2.1/2 years as these were opened up after 6 months. CharlieT
Whoever you give it to, be it handing it in to the police or your your local RFD, you will still have to fill in the variation paperwork to have another authority to acquire entered on your certificate. Gimlet
Is the mod listed by make and model on your ticket? If it just says "moderator" take it to a RFD and buy a SAK and leave your ticket untouched. This is a grey area that is as big a nuisance for firearms depts as it is for shooters. One for ones on mods is a condition ripe for reform.

Andy H
If you want to play by the rule's ask for a one for one variation then hammer the tube flat,When you aquire the new one contact firearms and tell them you scrapped the other one and if the FEO come's around hand him the flat tube and let the firearms dept do the legwork. DNS
Just leave it in the bottom of your cabinet until you are ready to buy a new one, then do a free one for one. It's not doing any harm surely?

cooter
A few years ago I handed one in at my FLO and they completed their side of the paperwork for me while I waited. I already had the forms filled in when I took it and I had called them in advance so I was expected. As others have said, keep it in the cabinet until you are ready to replace it. If it is not a named mod on your ticket, or one with a S/N, you can usually exchanged it at your RFD without paperwork, but this does depend on your RFD. njc110381
What sort of mod do you want to buy for the gun? If the model you want has no maker name then how are they to know that it is not a Manders? I'd just buy a new mod "for my air rifle" and throw the old one in the bin! JonathanL
If playing by the rules you cannot just scrap a firearm off yourself it must go to either the police or an rfd. It doesn't. You can scrap it your self if you want. The easiest method is just to hand it in to the police. The HO guidance says something to the effect of "no obstacle should be placed in the way of anyone wishing to turn in a firearm, whether or not it is legally possessed". J.
