barney 66
I'm thinking about that, I've a mates who's scrapping a disco due to rot, mechanicals are sound though. Does it raise first gear so it's tough on the clutch? If your on a hill or towing a trailer use low box to pull off, when you get used to it you can change from low to high on the move without a crunch, I always do this and to reverse as I live on a hill and reverse my quad trailer up on to my drive at night, saves on slipping the clutch

Sounds to me like its over fuelling for some reason.

If its just the transfer box that dictates the gear ratios then my defender will be just the same as disco ? They manage with the taller gearing

Never had a problem pulling of or riding the clutch and we pull 3 1/2 ton most of the time.
al4x
187 miles on 30 litres = 28.3 mpg where are you getting 19 from? I think from your earlier post. Realistically if that is what you are getting the only way to make much of a change is to buy a gaylander
landy george
If its just the transfer box that dictates the gear ratios then my defender will be just the same as disco ? They manage with the taller gearing Don't forget Defender has bigger tyres. I've got 265/75/16 which are taller then disco 235/70/16 Between 3rd,4th & 5th it don't pull as well cos of the tyres. Realistically if that is what you are getting the only way to make much of a change is to buy a gaylanderDon't be silly alfourx L/RH8er why would I want one of those?I'm happy with the defender now I've worked out the mpg accurately, it just set alarm bells ringing because it seemed pretty poor. Just noticed in another thread you were slagging landrover products again, yawn.... The transfer box would help with in cab noise too! Don't forget Defender has bigger tyres. I've got 265/75/16 which are taller then disco 235/70/16 Between 3rd,4th & 5th it don't pull as well cos of the tyres. I've got 235/70 on freestyle alloys off a disco on mine, so in affect that's lowered the gearing too
Fib new
I've got standard wheels on my defender with a disco 1:1.22 (I believe) transfer box. Makes a hell of a difference compared to the 1:1.4? Defender box. Pulls ok in all gears, but first is a little bit heavier. Noise is much lower at 70mph with this box. I do the same when pulling a heavy trailer -start in low range and then shift over to high range when rolling.

Fib new
You won't regret it! Don't know why land rover didn't offer this as an option for people who don't pull heavy trailers all the time. I was thinking about an overdrive befor this, but after reading about the poor reliability of these things and the price... Not a difficult choice to make. Take a look at the site from ashcroft engineering. Nice engine-gearbox-transferbox-wheel size calculator.

Take a look at the site from ashcroft engineering. Nice engine-gearbox-transferbox-wheel size calculator. was it the GKN overdrive that had the problems? its the roverdrive that i really want,it engages manually like the old fairy overdrives do.my motor runs on 9.00x16 tyres so a disco transferbox would be far to tall. Fib new
Yes, were the GKN ones. Not al had problems, but a lot did. If you're prepared to pay I think the boys at ashcroft engineering can make you a special ratio gearbox with an extra high end 5th gear. But won't be a cheap option! I would go standard wheels -or a bit bigger- and a 1:1.2 transfer box.
