Essex Ed
Hi all, I need a new jacket for the forthcoming season as my trusty Barbour is looking somewhat shabby and I think I'll keep it for the woodies and the odd bit of wildfowling. The problem is there is just too much choice. Do I go for tweed or am I too young(37) for that or what about a man made material. The machine washable Musto in tweed looks great and if it'll last a lifetime I'm not against the £375 price tag. But Bob Parratt is selling tweed at half that money, is it any good? Obviously I want something with freedom of movement, waterproof and above all warm, also it has to be smart. I'm lost with it really, my mates aren't much help, one says buy the best you can afford, another says don't waste a load of money on something you may only wear 6 times a year, which is a fair point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanking you in advance.
everycal
Yesterday I tried on an Aigle Sardany which was really nice!
Monkey Nuts
If your happy to spend £375 then I would suggest a Harkila Pro Hunter for a touch more.
sishyplops
Get yourself a chrysalis tweed you won't regret it, I love mine to bits, having said that the musto gear is nice, but chrysalis is the muts and hand made in England , trulock and Harris in framlingham Suffolk are a good stockist if your not too far from there
Flashman
If you work in London, go to Farlows on Pall Mall. They stock all the main players so you can try them all on in one place. Just round the corner is William Evans, which also has a broad stock as well.
pg123
Do you spend the season stood on a peg or do you have to do your share of beating? A tweed may be too warm for this. Also how near the dreaded barbed wire do you get? I use a Sherwood Forest jacket and if the worst happens and it gets ripped I can live with the fact I can afford another. adam f
Look at the Alan Paine tweed jackets, around the £150 mark and superb, waterproof and breathable and nicely cut not like the cheapo game fare jobs. I bought one a few years ago and I'm rely pleased with it.
Ralphster
+1 for Sherwood, works well not pricey and warm as you can need. Takes punishment in torrential downpours also

Essex Ed
Thanks very much everyone for all your comments. I think the Alan Paine sounds good value for money and there's a dealer just down the A12 at Mountnessing, so I can pop down and try one on. I'm not in favour of mail order with this sort of thing, I think you've got to try it on. Sorry Baker Boy, they're going to be too large for me I'm only 42 chest, but thanks for the offer of help.
