Buying A Secondhand .243

I'm looking at buying my first .243 shortly for foxes and I've found one at an okay price and of a suitably good make too. I've emailed the seller/RFD and this is what he said:

I bore scoped the rifle before putting it on sale and can advise that although not it is not perfect it is far better than the vast majority of used rifles we see, it has next to no sign of fire cracking or throat erosion which is a common problem on used .243 rifles and it only the odd minor blemish which is of no significance which has been caused by a less than perfect cleaning regime, I would estimate that the rifle has fired around 500 rds or so and can see no reason it will not group 1" or better at 100m with ammo it likes.

Does that sound reasonable? It'll be my first full bore rifle and I don't want to buy a shot out dud that's no use to man nor beast.

Cheers,

Paddy

So, if it doesn't shoot 1" ask him if he will take it back! If he says NO, then guess what I'd do!

i have bought plenty of 22Cf and 243 2nd hand rifles

some with rifling so bad that no-one would touch them!

guess what..

they all shoot sub 1"!

no dealer will give you a guarantee that it will shoot 1"

what if you can;t shoot!? or use ammo it doesn't like?

my old .243 hated privi, geko and sako, barn door stuff, 4" groups

that said.... at close to £600 2nd hand when new ones can be had for £7-750ish it would want to be mint!!

Nobody said you, and the dealer said with ammo it likes, we are talking gun, not personal performance.

You buy whatever you like, dealers round here put there money where there mouth is and if the gun doesn't work they take it back! :good:

I was thinking to offer £500 cash for it as it's obviously seen some action and especially as it's just a customers rifle they're selling for him. If they don't like it I'll find a different one elsewhere.

Cheers guys

So there is no comeback on the shop then....?

Why not only buy it if you can shoot it first on a range and happy with it?...... You need to weigh up the risk against the saving on a new gun.

:yes::yes::yes::good::good:

I don't see why in that case some sort of field test cannot be arranged before you part with money.

Unfortunately the rifle is 450 miles away from me so that kind of rules out any field test :(

Part of me thinks it might just be better all round to do a deal on a complete new package on a T3 lite, scope and mod. Then it's down to me and my looking after it.

:hmm::hmm: That adds a different dimension to the whole thing, as you say, perhaps a rethink in order.

ATB! :good:
