Dog Transit Boxes

Evening all

I am currently doing some work with an engineering company looking at potentially manufacturing dog transit systems for the back of cars, 4x4's, estates, vans and pick ups. I know there are a few companies out there currently doing this but what we hope to bring is a more affordable, custom setup tailored directly for the customers needs.

So my initial question would be........ what would people on here like to see in transit boxes for dogs that currently is unavailable/very expensive?

Im talking everything from security, weight, design, add ons (such as drawer units etc).

We are hoping to offer only custom setups BUT at a very affordable price with no lack of quality

p.s - we are currently designing a fit out for my l200 as a prototype so pictures should be up and a price in the coming week or so.

Let me know guys

Hi Longy,

My problem is that like others I have not got a dedicated shoot/dog vehicle and limited storage when the transit box is not in use, so a collapsible model would suit me, one that folds up and takes up less room in the garage, if thats an option without to much comprise to strength/security.

I think you would have to put together a range of boxes and let the buyers see the finished products,

As I cannot see anyone ordering a box without seeing identical pictures to what they expect.

As far as security goes in my situation the car would have to be wrote off before the dog gets touched.

That's why I got rid of my lintran db8 and use a collapsible cage as I just cannot justify the size and storing it when not in use , if a accident is going to crush a lintran or any other high end box it will not be much worse in a normal metal cage.

Even though my hilux is only used for shooting the boot is very lived in with blood and feathers all over, the cage only uses half of the boot and gets collapsed if going away anywhere when I need the boot.

I find a fancy cage on show is a attraction for thieves

It's a big market I have seen some very good collapsible ones with fibreglass sides on the net very cheap...

In my opinion make the cheapest one you can, there is a market for it,the current market is over priced

A unit you can take apart is a bonus for user convenience and postage reasons.

A choice is what will stand out I this market, I mean what is the point of having a crash cage in a euro five star rated car?

A GRP or plastic mould one for an entry model followed by pressed steel or aluminium

Go for cheap, and sell the extra bedding, dog coats as well.

Best wishes

Thanks for the feedback guys. It would not be financially viable to make a whole range hence the custom boxes. I do feel however we could be alot cheaper than some out there with no comprimise in fit or finish. Once my truck is done ill get some pics up so people can get an idea.

I've been doing a lot of looking and thinking about a new dog box arrangement for my 2010 L200 - so I'll be looking forward to seeing your end result.

I've had Lintran, Transk9 and portapet, plus a cage, and from my point of view the Portapet was the winner on weight - easy in and out - the other makes are very heavy, so with either of them the box stays in the back 99% of the time, whereas with the Portapet, in and out easy. Cheap understorage that you don't have to build yourself is very handy.

An all weather (i.e open pick up) is another good option - so long as it does actually protect the dogs, especially on runs.

And obviously cost/quality is a major factor.

Cheers

I have a Ford Ranger double cab which is quite often full in the pick up load area.

It would be ideal for me to have a box that would go on the back seat, maybe taking up all of it

so it would accommodate a lab,and be transferable on to the load area.

It may have to be collapsible to fit through the back door.

Cheers
