another money and time saver is get rid of the 1 for 1 .if you have been deemed suitable to have a fac and a calibre of rifle (you apply for each calibre) . what good does having to reapply every time you want to replace it with something newer or different maker as long as the flo knows where it has gone and who to. like with shotguns. or is that to easy and cost effective.......

I agree wholeheartedly as long as you only have the same number of guns as 'slots' on your ticket - any RFD can ensure that's the case. Why also do we need moderators separately? They only make a 'public' difference on sub sonic ammo so whats the fuss about ? I appreciate its part of legislation but one has perhaps to ask why?

WRT medical issues - change can take place at any time but is rarely instantaneous. We allow a doctor to inform the police of specific conditions which make ownership of firearms a potential risk to public safety so why not just simply make that a duty at any time ?

Doctors already have that duty if a patient is a danger to themselves or anyone else.....

I can see no reason why an FAC cannot be for 1/3/5/7 guns upto .22RF/.223/.308/.50 and allow the holder to change at their discretion.

there are a lot of things that could be done to improve the current system a ten year or longer cert being one.i would be a little concerned because as with all negotiations it is never one sided the police would no doubt come back with a compromise of some kind.ie price hike.or as in the case of durham doctors fee paid by applicant.

I'm not against it in principal, but what is to be gained by a 10 year renewal as opposed to 5? If it's such a good thing then why stop at 10? Wont the Police simply have all the problems and expense they currently experience, but in a 10 year cycle as opposed to a 5? If it is such a burden and drain on the resources of the Police then wouldn't it be better for administration of licensing to be removed from them completely?

Like I said, in principle I'm not against it, I just can't see any gains for either Police or shooters. It isn't, in my opinion, the cost nor the lifespan of a certificate which is the problem, from the perspective of a shooter, but rather the way in which the process is administered. I fail to see how extending the lifespan will negate the illogical, inconsistency of how the act is interpreted by various forces.

I can't recall any shooters expressing any complaints regarding a tickets lifespan, but can recall many regarding the inconsistencies and illogicality of the process. There are more pressing matters which are of concern to shooters at the moment rather than certificate lifespans; wouldn't BASC's time be better spent sorting these first?

Well said indeed.

Don't worry too much about BASC, though. If they've time to play around with this it can only mean that they've completed all the work necessary to combat any possible little nasties in the already overdue LAG report.

I've got an old paper licence so no contact with DVLA until I'm 70 - this will be 40+ yrs with no extra cost or hassle and I suspect as I near 70 (so wife says) I'll be a dangerous old ****** but no one cares as it is a car!!

I really object to this 5 year intrusion into me, my life and my health just to satisfy an official body for whom my respect wanes daily. I' ve had this conversation with my neighbour, a senior social worker, and he agrees that police should know I have guns and they are secure but does not see purpose of current 5yr renewal. He has no interest in guns but also has no concerns I own a few.

You can go even further and stop having to specify things so specifically by calibre/chambering. If your cert is granted for deer stalking then there is no reason why it cannot simply specify any deer legal rifle. There is ZERO public safety reason to be more specific than that.

Similarly, if you are a target shooter then essentially anything suitable for use on whatever ranges you have access to should be fine.

I have always understood that it was originally an anti-poaching measure.

Unless you move house, change your name, get a fixed penalty or several opther eventualities which may occur.

But again the issue of sanity comes up with motor licences. A GP friend told me they vv rarely declare someone unfit to drive even when in the wary stages of dementia etc. they do not want the extra health issues associated with taking away a persons transport. Recently one of my wife's friends was telling her the husband didn't drive much because of dementia but he still knew one route to the shops 10 miles away so she let him still take that journey - quite glad he hasn't got a gun licence!

The latest gun application form will make many elderly people very wary of going to the doctor.

I don't see that it's any worse than the previous one, to be honest. The medical questions are essentially the same.

Usually they wait for them to have a crash and surrender it, hopefully no one is injured in the inevitable "hitting the throttle not the brake" incident ...... Happened near my house a couple of months 87 year old lady got confused hit the throttle and demolished the cable box outside the post office could have been a lot lot worse.....

Anyone known a shooter get confused and kill someone?
