bang bang birdy
Hi all I want to get a new rotary. I had one years ago but sold it. Which is the best to get for the money? are the flying decoys worth getting? Been looking on the net at different site but would like to know your experiences of the different ones out there. Thanks in advance BBB
motty
My budget model magnet is several years old (bought from UKSW) and has never let me down. I got it for around £50 and I've killed thousands of pigeons whilst using it. I don't think it's worth spending loads on a rotary machine. Some look slightly better and are more lightweight, but I've found they don't attract the pigeons any better. I can only recommend hypa flaps as far as flying decoys go, but I generally stick to using dead birds.
Longchalk
I recently bought a rotary kit from DJ Decoys and am very pleased with it, and with their service. It's a good robust unit, simple to put together, and looks like it will last for years. More importantly, the pigeons seem to love it too! http://www.djdecoys.com/product/pigeon-magnet-rotary-machine-bag/ I went for the £110 version, with the bag, battery and most importantly a speed controller, as it seemed liked good value compared to pricing them separately elsewhere . I've since discovered however that a 7ah battery (any make) will only last for around 3-4 hours tops, so I bought a 12ah one from my local Tool Station, which easily lasts all day. http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Electrical/Batteries/Sealed+Lead+Acid+Battery+12V+120Ah+151+x+99+x+101mm/d190/sd2450/p69745 As for decoys, I'd look no further than Hypaflaps from UK Shootwarehouse. - They are exceptionally realistic once you get the speed adjusted just right for the wind conditions. I've not used other types, but I can't see how the "whirly wing " pro-flap type can look anywhere near as good. Only thing with the hypaflaps is they are a little delicate. I got some bubble wrap and gaffa tape and made a big padded envelope to carry them in. Weighs nothing at all and I can shove them in the top of the rucksack without damaging them. A short clip of them in action, (although admittedly I hadn't got the speed quite right for maximum flap here) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjearipWojc&feature=youtube_gdata_player Edited February 16, 2014 by Longchalk
JDog
I have a Pinewood rotary which I have had for ten years. I look after it, oil it and I once sent it back for a service. It has never let me down. A friend has a 'budget model' bought at the same time for £50. He never looks after it, he just throws it in the back of his car until the next time he needs it and that has not let him down either. When we shoot together and have two rotaries going at the same time there is no difference in their abilities to attract pigeons.

Prawn
I've read a lot of good feedback about the cheap magnet/rotary from AA decoys for £45. http://aadecoys.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_60&product_id=82 I think i'm going to buy this one myself or get a flapper from AA decoys as i'm fairly new to pigeon decoying.
