Suffolk shooter
Right, not sure if I'm goning to get the answer I'm looking for but here goes. How much or What is the going rate for 1300 acres of prime game shooting estate with ready matured plantations, woods and flight ponds? (Difficult to answer without seeing the land I know). How much more an acre for cover crop to be planted? (I realise different types cost diffeent costs, but as an average). I have very valid reasons for asking these questions, but unfortunately can't go into anymore details for security reasons All I can say is that the land in question will have the rights for Pheasants, Partridges, Woodcock, Pigeon, Duck as well as all the usual vermin. Sensible comments please SS
colin.y
well quiet close to a reply mate i know of an estate down here that was rented for shooting 1100 acres/all the above and vermin good fir belts set up for shooting. It was rented for around £4000 per year i think . as for covercrops well it really does depend on what you want planted and what state the ground is in before you start ,i will have a look in a book at work tomorrow ,contractors rates annual. Ferretboy111
I dont know much about how much it would cost, a couple of quid though i reckon,,,,, you did say sensible offers. But for cover crops, it depends if the estate is under the ELS or HLS etc as some bird mixes come under that, but from previous keepers knowledge, they dont last long in the winter. http://www.solwayfeeders.com/ProductsResultsList1.asp?cat=34 This shows the price of some mixes, some of it looks amazing, but expensive. Doubt any "farm" land would be sold for agricultural purposes at £15-20k per acre, you might get nearer to that per Hectare if it is prime Grade A land of a decent size in the right place. 1.7 acres for £55 would be for development. As for renting shooting rights anything between £4 to £20 depending on size, location, pens, ponds and type etc. Good average would be about £7 Jerry
Suffolk shooter
Cheers for the replies guys. Being management in the construction industry,I have to say that £55k for 1.7 acre's has to be for land with outline planning permission for development, but then again this is cheap as round our way land has been going for £80k for 0.25 acre with outline planning permission. This was basically part of somebodies back garden that they decided they could do without and had alternative access from a different street. I think I'm going to offer £4-4.50/acre and see how it goes. Lets face it I'm not buying the land only renting it. Cheers SS
jcbruno
i cant belive these prices perhaps an idea for you fellas is maybe to get your local club or a group of friends to buy land here in western canada or the maratime if you want land that looks like home but man land is cheep here and you can do what ever you want on it aslong as it is far enough away from a town but i would say for the equivalent of 6000 ponds you could buy 65 acres with out a building on it and man yo could fly here pretty cheap these days i have seen tickets for around 150 ponds and bringing guns here is pretty easy lots of americans and europeans do all th time just an idea fellas

al4x
The cover crop cost depends a bit on how the farm is farmed. If it can be put down as set aside or done on the countryside stewardship scheme the landowner may be prepared to just charge you the establishment costs otherwise you'll be looking at compensation for lack of crop yield on the area as well. All our covers are down as set aside so I think we pay for the seed and @£100 an acre to establish it which is pretty cheap. For the cost of the land bear in mind how its to be paid is it cash in Hand (ours is) or does it go through their books? the best option is to open discussions and try and find what the last person was paying you may be surprised. We also give the farm a gun for each day of the season hence only pay £1500 for 500 acres this works out well for them and for us
Suffolk shooter
Having looked at The Kings Catalogue over the Weekend I have managed to come up with a price of £1200 for 6 acres based on allowing £1000 for the estate to prep and sow etc. Seems this may be a bit high looking at an earlier post a couple back, so when I speak to them, maybe it will be lower Cheers for the response though guys. M. Robson, Surely you mean £32/acre, jesus you could sow cover crop over the whole of the UK for £320/acre based onthe size of our estate alone. M ROBSON
SS, This is the whole cost (contractors, seed, rental etc) of one acre which they use as the drive, they have 16 in the entire shoot (several farms) and they drive each one 3 times a season. They shoot cocks only and they are all wild birds, often 150+ days. It's truely amazing to watch these birds spring 40 yards straight up before heading like rockets over the guns. They don't have to pay for and rear poults just food for the wild birds and the game crop. Sounds a bloody good deal to me!! From what I'm told there are dozens of shoots in the area that opperate this way. Mark.
