henry d
Keswick & Threlkeld are nice but my fave is the Mill Inn at Mungrisdale.Very secluded and a great restaurant/bar,if you`re lucky you might get to walk with the hounds. Oly
Keswick & Threlkeld are nice but my fave is the Mill Inn at Mungrisdale.Very secluded and a great restaurant/bar,if you`re lucky you might get to walk with the hounds. I agree with the above, Buttermere and Loweswater are a little further out of the way from most other tourists whilst retaining lakes and hills too. Some harder walking round there though. Bowness, Windermere and Ambleside are not too bad this time of year, but expect to see tourists...and not too many locals! I know many will laugh but Shap is excellent - the Greyhound pub is one of the best places in Cumbria to eat & drink in my view...and I've sampled many! Fells on your doorstep too...walk to Hawswater and back in a day...that'll stretch your legs nicely. Sedbergh is also a cracking place to stay...just over the M6 into the edge of the Dales...an area many don't know about....good fell walking...or valley walking over to Dent...good food & drink in both Dent and Sedbergh...plus a nice house for sale...mine ! Tiny village of Lupton has a great friendly clay shoot on Sundays too...only over the hill, on the A65 from Kendal M6 junction on the way towards Kirkby Lonsdale. Enjoy...cracking weather up here today, sun & snowy tops...and due to stay for the weekend too!

The Eskdale valley is nice, with some decent places to stay, it is much quieter than the tourist based Windermere etc. From my office I can see snow topped fells etc.
wacker
Ennerdale water in the northern lakes very quiet and no roads around it. Take a look at a book - it's a pathfinder guide called Lake District walks - shows all the walks, pubs places to visit, with photos. Don't go without it! We went once in Feb, & again in Aug & got engaged there! Keswick is a lovely place to visit. If you haven't been to the lakes - DO!
Lord Geordie
I used to frequent the lakes often and found myself returning to Keswick and Braithwaite (mainly for the horseshoe hills) I used to go to a place calles The Swinside Inn they did fantastic meals and they have a nice roaring fire you can sit next too whilst eating. Scenery from the windows is also fantastic. IF you have the nice weather sitting in the beer garden is also nice Location if interested is Swinside Inn - , Newlands Valley, Keswick, CA12 5UE LG
