aris
You can buy all sorts of wood blanks for handles/scales all over the web. If it were me, i'd try to personalise it somehow. Find an old piece of broken or unwanted furniture or other wooden item from a friend or relative, or from a place that has significance to you - and make scales out of that. It was sitting around for 30 years so it was good to make use of it, and its a nice bit of wood too.

I,m liking that train of thought but finding some is going to be mega hard as I don't think we have anything suitable lying round ..........time to get onto my sis down in kent see what she got lying round............we left loads of OLD furniture in mums house when she passed wardrobes dressing table etc .damn hindsight

When a friends grandmother died, he was left a few thousand pounds in her will. He had a bespoke guitar made by a local luthier with wood that was grown in the area where she lived. Poignant - and something that she will be remembered for and possibly even passed down through the generations. Look around - there are bits of wood everywhere - you've just not been looking until now
hodge911
and whats even more to the old saying " if only you know then what you know now " as my granddad was an old school master carpenter and was absolutely amazing with wood he made the family loads of bespoke furniture and I can remember [ just tho I was only 11 when he passed ] he had an old out house/workshop full of offcuts and larger pieces of all sorts of wood that my dad and uncles just piled up in the garden and set fire to

FatFreddysCat
I've got an old walnut shotgun stock you can use. It's had a few lumps cut out of it already but it's a nice piece of wood and there's plenty there for a few knife handles. Yours for free if you pay the postage, or as you say you've got a sister in Kent I maybe able to drop it off with her. Will try to attach some pics. http://s999.photobucket.com/user/Fatfredscat/library/Stock?sort=3&page=

johnbaz
Just to let you know- Oak is rich in tannin so if you use it for scales/ block then you'll need to make sure it's isolated from the steel as it will rust faster than a 1980s Alfa sud!!! You can use fibre or just make doulbly sure that you get a good glue barrier John
