A good windy afternoon.

A friend has called me twice to say that he has seen a lot of pigeons on one of my farms and could we go and shoot them? Anyway we did do exactly that this afternoon.

The barley had been drilled five days previously and there were birds on the field when we arrived. There was also a strong wind but we settled ourselves in the lee of a big wood out of the main blasts. The interesting thing is that we could see that the pigeons were affected by the wind way out over the adjacent fields but when they came into the pattern they hit what we thought was very still air. Once we had shot a few it was apparent that there was a vortex quite close in to our hide positions as we could see feathers flying about in all directions. These were distracting at times. We started with a rotary but soon took it in and birds decoyed well without it.

We got the flight line spot on and pigeons decoyed nicely for three hours and we picked exactly 70.

This was my first day out without Jack. He would have enjoyed himself I know.

Well done , I am sure you missed having Jack along .

That's well over 200 pigeon since you doom and gloom thread about no peas or beans a few days ago !

I have also been bemoaning the lack of pigeon and have shot no more than 10 in the last month , I hope that puts things into perspective for you , things can always be worse , much worse !!

Well done JD. I've often wondered about very windy days, setting up in the lee of a hedge or something as the birds seem to come in to, say 60-80 yds then pull away. I thought they could be magnet-shy but wondered about the wind. A pilot friend of mine said the lee of a windbreak could set up bad turbulance, which he wouldn't want to land in, so why would a pigeon be happy??

Depends how keen they are.
