Adapted ferret collars

Hi,

I'm thinking about trying to modify a MK3 collar onto a harness as I'm sure the ferreters on here will know that sometimes they aren't the most secure of all creations and it can often be a challenge getting the collar to stay on a ferret with a small head as it can slip off unless you have done it up so tightly that the ferret is going blue in the face.

Last ferreting trip Grace slipped her collar but luckily I was able to reach it from the mouth of a hole and also Grace from another hole. Needless to say I don't want this happening again as I could lose the collar (or have to dig a silly distance) or even worse a ferret. :P

Does anybody have any ideas on how to do this or any designs? ???

Thanks in advance for any and all replies. :)

FM :good:

well back allong when i used to go ferreting we had the same problem. but what we did was to make the coller longer, and put them around the waist. worked a treat, never lost a polecat again! but they do tend to bite a bit more while putting it on

be warned if you try it

Problem with making a harness is you have far more to snag on something. You'd be better off making a custom strap for the locator you have which is better suited to the size of fert you have.

When out with SS and his mate on Sat we couldn't get SS's collars on his mates ferts, they were just too small...

I would stick with the original collar. We always check the collars are tight enough by gently trying to pull them back over the ferrets head. We only use small gills and haven't found a problem with doing this.

You could try making another hole in the collar if you are finding that it is too tight. A hot needle should do the job as they are only made of nylon. <_<
