alexl
Hi folks, if hypothetically i got clocked by a speed camera today whilst doing 80-85 on a dual carrageway what would the punishment be? i have been driving for over twenty years but only ever had one speeding ticket many moons ago,so a bit out of touch with the process of being done for speeding. I have been told by a mate i would probably get £60 fine an 3 points but might be able to endure a safety seminar instead of taking the points. anyone Know for sure? If it was a 70 limit road you may be lucky, in my experience every car ive driven reads over on the speedometer, so an indicated 80-85 may not actually be that quick. I was under the impression that there was a 10% leeway on speeds to account for speedometer inacuracy?

Speed readings on satnavs are pretty accurate.
alexl
Speedometers can legally over-read by up to 10% but must not under-read. So no excuses! Speed readings on satnavs are pretty accurate. Sat nav is what I checked on, I suppose manufacturers err on the side of caution with the spec of the speedometer, to prevent any liability for speeding. The size of the wheels fitted would also make a difference to indicated to actual speed, so I presume they factor this in too where multiple sizes are offered. sonicdmb
Vans are 10mph lower limit so if you were in 70 limit van is 60 , a mate works for a contractor and got caught in van , only exception is if it has windows all round its not classed as a van . Kangoo = car derived van car speed limits apply. Windows all round of say a transit would make it a minibus same speed limit as the van version

keg
The 10% allowance is not law, it is at the discretion of the constabulary you are under at the time. There is a 2 lanes up, 1 lane down road near me, part of the Leeds ring road between Rodley and Owlcoates roundabouts for those that know it. It's national speed limit for most of it so 60mph in my car yet people coming down the hill slam the brakes on until they hit 40 for the 3 cameras on that stretch of road. Madness. derfley
ACPO guidelines here http://www.acpo.police.uk/documents/uniformed/2013/201305-uoba-joining-forces-safer-roads.pdf the relevant section is 9. Basically they can choose not to prosecute below "posted speed limit +(%10 + 2mph)", but they can choose to prosecute at any amount over the posted limit, as South Wales police tend to. From the OP's post if he was @ 85mph (and assuming his speedo is accurate, most over read) he just falls into the banding for a speed awareness course.
