Travel Sick

Recommended Posts

Thursday night I had a phone call from a Farmer telling me he had drilled peas at the begining of the week and every time he had passed the field it was covered with pigeons. So Friday straight to the said field , nothing , not a crow or pigeon. As I scanned the trees around the field the farmer stopped , he was amazed that it was devoid of birds and he said he would phone if they return. Not to bore you with the detail we spent the rest of the day travelling one hundred and twenty five miles and did not find a flock worth setting up for.We had seen a flock of approx eighty on some clover we thought but looking at the field it was chickweed in the grass, we asked the Farmer if we could shoot and he told us he was going to spray the weeds off this afternoon. That is the first BLANK for a very long time. When I returned home I had a call that the crows were on some barley drillings , we had looked at that field today at about 11.00 with nothing on it. The Farmer had seen it at approx 16.00 and said it was covered.

Saturday we started or route in reverse so that we did not miss the afternoon feeders and found a few on some drilled barley , this was on a farm we used to shoot but it had been sold. After being sent to three farms we finally got the right Farmer who said yes. We returned to the field and the birds had gone due to a tractor working the next field. So we ended up at the reported crow field at 14.00 to find one crow in the centre of the field and the Farmer drilling the next field with the crows dropping in behind the tractor. we set up on the edge of both fields, able to shoot both. We had been so confident we had no decoys and had to wait an age till we managed to call a bird within range . We shot till 18.00 and picked up fiftyone crows and jackdaws and one pigeon who came within range. we had covered two hundred and five miles in our weekend quest for a bit of sport hence we were Travel Sick.

205 miles, gee now that's determination, at least you got a bag of some sort. :good:

Makes you wonder where the pigeons disapear to, we have same here at the moment.

They all disappear to the rolling hills of the Cotswolds , where they are transfixed by birds sun bathing on their backs on the drillings??????

A despondent post. Cheer up you will soon be in the sun trying to explain to the Greek bar owner what your hobby back home really is.

It's just the drive through France, Switzerland and Italy with the wife telling me to keep my eyes on the road and stop looking for Pigeons. The Greek bar owner is not a problem I just borrow the PC and show them a really good site on the Internet with real birds!!!!!!!
