steyrman
the 17 fire ball is a center fire round it is a 221 fireball necked down to a 17 as far as using it for dogs you will be very disipionted the supper lite bullet will be efected by every thing around you the wind will move it alot if it hits a blade of grass it could be deflected a drop of rain can explode it in mid flight it is siply a target round i agree with some of the others that the 22-250 would make a very good round if you shoot factory load most 22-250 will down a dog at 300 yards easy and you canpurchas the ammo fairly cheap ive not seen ony of the 17 fireball ammo yet but i expect it to be around 30 dollors a box of 20 Read this 5 mins ago on a 17 Remington site
LeadWasp
ooh...ooh....20 calibres like 20 Tac or 20 VarTarg. Isn't it fantastic what goes on ballistically between .17 and .22 CF. ...and i guess this is why there's such debate!
Bewsher500
Wouldnt worry in the slightest about getting factory ammo I would worry about getting bullets and powder but as the choices are wide I would skip factory and move straight to homeloads! I like the idea of .17CF's but not enough to give up my .222 on the whole rain thing....... sheesh.... Supersonic bullets almost travel inside a pocket of air caused by their own "bow wave" or shock wave, the bigger the meplat....the bigger the bow wave most bullets won't even get wet in the rain! Whilst I am not going to get into the mental masturbation of "he said she said".....there is some anecdotal reports of bullets and rain but the theory indicates that it is extremely unlikely http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Shock_wave Edited May 12, 2014 by Bewsher500
theshootist
I have been thinking about a 17rem in a lightweight walking rifle to complement my heavy 22-250 which it better shot off a bipod or prone. I mentioned this in a gunshop and was told to forget 17rem and recommended a t3 lite in 223 with a 1 in 12 barrel to push light bullets fast. Sorry to highjack but does anyone have an opinion on that?
Underdog
Theshootist.....is that a Colt Lightning in your avatar? A 223 with 1in12 barrel is what I would choose if I was after a 223 but your lightweight rifle idea is nice. Remember though that most 17 barrels are by default a bull barrel and a fair weight! I have never seen a light 17 barrel so a custom job may be required. It would be fine as a general carry gun IN MY HUMBLE OPINION. Here is why, even if I do get flamed again! It is very safe! The moment it connects, the bullet is finished. At 400 or so yards has very little penetration. This does allow for some piece of mind. It is also very difficult to NOT get it shooting tiny groups! theshootist
Underdog- no its a charles-lancaster spencer pump action black powder 12b from the 1880s. They are pretty terrible but can be very pretty! I see what you mean regards safety. I was thinking about the trajectory given that the 40gn 223 can be pushed to 3800fps, it can't be too far off ths 17rem.

Believe me...a 223 with 40 grainers can easily knock on the door of 4000fps despite what the experts say. If you want it to of course. U. Dekers
40g factory .223 ammo is available at stated 3800ft sec, possibly some even faster, I believe Hornady do a 35g at 4000ft sec. If you make home brews then................

Sorry to highjack but does anyone have an opinion on that? I should take a very serious look at a .20 Ruger if its light and fast. As a lower weight option check out a CZ527 nice mini mauser controlled feed and reduced dedicated small calibre frame. Balistically it should run quite similar to your 22-250 and the same 40 grns will have a higher BC than the .22 version with more grunt behind its backside from what is a necked down .222 magnum case. There is nothing wrong with the .223 or .222 mind you, but if your not running 50-55 grn why bother?. A bit of work on a CZ can turn out a real nice gun, look at what some high end smiths have done with the CZ magnums and they are all metal bottoms, bolts magazines the whole kit caboodle, set triggers etc. Good barrels excellently chambered during production of the bore not chambered after from a barrel blank. The only downside is they need a bit of fettling and running in, bit short of room to pillar bed on the front but its easy enough done
