Sco77w
I was out with the dogs earlier and I saw a lump of rock that looked like it had been washed out of the ground by all the surface water, it looked like steel but rock like so I picked it up, it is a lot heavier than its size would suggest. Anyway it seems it may be an iron meteorite, maybe Canyon Diablo if what my search on the internet says is right. does anyone know if its worth anything, it weighs 200g

Sco77w
+ 1 especially fron steel city At first I didn't think this possible as it was out in the middle of nowhere where I found it but the paths have had a bit of a fix-up so it's possible it was in the hard core that they've used to repair the path ways. Saying that it does look like the ones I've seen on the internet.
Sco77w
done a bit more internet searching and found that the canyon diablo is from a specific crater. it looks the same tho.
Northerner
I really would need a photo to identify it, however the best bet would be to chop off a little corner and polish it with some wet/dry paper to see what is inside
Kes
Its rather more likely to be ore or, as suggested, slag. Its easy to tell which with a photo, If however it turns out to be meteorite they are obviously rare and you could sell it for something approaching £2k at that weight. These meteorites contain material which can be millions, if not hundreds of millions of years old. They all have a typical crystalline structure which helps age them, The other trace material in them can be a guide to the area of 'sky' it came from. If it turns out to be a meteorite I would donate a piece to the Natural History Museum in London - They will give you the info from testing it, and, as we all know, money isnt everything.
