lloydi73 Posted May 21, 2014 Report Share Posted May 21, 2014 It's more what you're going to be shooting on the land...if rabbits then they'll probably give you a .177 hmr or 22lr for....foxes small deer 243, on first application they probably won't go much above that. You'll probably now, have to have a mentor to take you out for a few weeks, then write you a letter stating they feel you're now safe and confident to own a rifle and shoot by yourself and that you understand what is and is not a safe shot to take, ricocheting back drops etc. This is what I'm having to do at the moment for Thames Valley Police FEO........ I was in the same boat mentor wise!! Only by joining this site (which is an excellent site mostly filled with great knowledgable people), filling out your profile and talking to people in your area, do you stand a chance. It took me 3 odd months, but by chance I got talking to a local on here and it turned out we both clay pigeon shot at the same place. He put me in touch with his mate who had the experience and ability to mentor me, and tonight is our first night out on my permission. Coincidently, he shoots the farm next to me, so it's a very small, but very cautious world on here!! Permissions are very hard to get, so like Pmiddy says, more info you put on your profile, more chance you have of gaining someone's confidence to invite you out. They will have a probationary period where you are closely supervised using club or other members rifles and then you can apply for your FAC. But if you join a club, I think you're restricted to small calibre rim fire only, and also single shot rifles, not magazine on your license. Berettacocker Posted May 21, 2014 Report Share Posted May 21, 2014 Hello archer, if where you shoot your shotgun, ask the farmer if is possible to apply for a FAC .22lr or .17hmr to help him control rabbit nos. if he agrees, apply and wait, you might not need a mentor with South Yorkshire police, never known anyone being asked this by Essex police. Well I've been out a few times with mentor now, and can definitely unequivacly say, for rabbits, 17HMR...OMG....The rush and thrill is amazing, the whipcrack as it leaves the barrel, and the imminent proceeding thud as it thumps into the rabbit and sends it into a spin is second to none. If all you are shooting is rabbits, I strongly advise to go for the 17HMR... I've been shooting the 243, but it's a harder beast to handle for newbies, like me!! quite a big kick, and to be honest way OTT for rabbits, it just blows them to pieces....all to do with bullet size and hydraulic pressure and shock wave in cavity..... I simply said, he let me pop a few shots off with 243 to see difference in recoil and kick (My god, theres a difference!!) ...never did I say we shot rabbits with 243!! I then went onto explain what would happen "IF" one were to use a 243....as archer, about 2/3 the way down the page stated he only wanted to shoot rabbits, and shootgun advised him to apply for a 243 or 270 for this!! You can join a centre fire club and you can have magazines - no bother there To the OP - If you join a club you will have to wait for six months as you need to go through the probation period though before they'll support your application. Land is the best way and let them mention a mentor - don't offer it up first.
