Underdog
The first barrel makers were barrel coopers and the first barrels for guns were wood! Some folk on here would have kittens back then
deershooter
Plenty available! The cutters slide up a taper in the shank themselves having the same but opposite taper. It was cut with a grinder and it gets worse! The cutter is a ground small file! If blacksmithing is no longer considered respectable that's a shame. When we lose our imagination and rely totally on our wallet I think we have lost something special. So do you do you own choke work then? U. I do all my own work on everything but have never had to use a angle grinder on a gun job over the years I have spent a fortune setting up a workshop with milling machine lathe drill welding equipment wood working equipment checkering tools barrel dent raisers ,barrel mikes and all associated equipment . I do own a angle grinder but it lives on a stand to make a chop saw Deershooter The proof acts were introduced to stop blacksmiths making guns Deershooter

Underdog
Underdog ... were is best to source a secondhand adjustable reamer suitable for 12 bore ... lve a couple of guns ld like to ream ou. ..... cheers There are options on ebay . To be honest I use to work next to an old machine shop and he would borrow me anything for a bit of welding in return. If I do another I would go visit them or get one off ebay. I do all my own work on everything but have never had to use a angle grinder on a gun job over the years I have spent a fortune setting up a workshop with milling machine lathe drill welding equipment wood working equipment checkering tools barrel dent raisers ,barrel mikes and all associated equipment . I do own a angle grinder but it lives on a stand to make a chop saw Deershooter The proof acts were introduced to stop blacksmiths making guns Deershooter The proof act was to stop bad guns being made, I feel your assumption that it was to stop blacksmiths making guns period is predjudiced with a hint of arrogance maybe.....or have I got that totally wrong? Your set up sounds wonderful and what a wonderful privilege it must be to have such a set up. However as I rarely needed to do chokes and of limited means my `blacksmithing' methods will suffice for me. If you are looking for a 'my workshop is better than yours' contest then you win, win by default as I really really don't care or mind. ATB.
