OK, it's not the rifle, it's me

Fed up of getting lousy groups at 50 yards, I rigged up a bench rest and after blasting a few magazines through (recently cleaned the barrel, against all advice!) got the results below:

The 5 shots on the right were taken before I adjusted the sight and the four hole group (with one flyer below) were next. At least it shows the rifle is capable of decent accuracy and I can feel more confident when I go out hunting with it now after practicing away from the bench, of course

cracking second group,,

only two weeks ago whilst zeroing a .22rf at 60yrds decided to get my wolverine .177 out on the same target,,to mine and my shooting buddies astonishment I gave it 3 milldots and grouped as well as his .22rf, we where both shocked ,

but the rimfire was certainly more effective on the bunnies over 40yrds, everything it hit just dropped like a stone,

nice grouping though so it must be you and not the rifle :yes:

Crud develops round the throat, breech, bolt/extractors, mod, crown, everywhere you can think of on a .22lr.

Even for the die hard, "never clean a .22lr" brigade, it pays to keep these areas clear, even if you can't be bothered with the barrel!:good:

Classic case of re-leading it looks like to me (just a loose term it could equally be re-lubing, just know it happens). Keep an eye on that set zero, mine wanders about group to group after a clean (all has settled down after 15 mins paper punching before field use though its perhaps not as drastic as yours looks like at the start)

I set my guns up off what I use in the field as your head will sit different off the bench rather than when you are standing, leaning against a fence post etc as any error you have will still be there so I build it in to my set up.....

TEH

Quite right but I can shoot more accurately off a bench and wanted to eliminate other factors before admitting I'm not the sharp shooter I once was.
