ziplex
I'd say go Jap... cheap and reliable Here's my little monster :o .... Nice, Wookie and I work just down the road from you, in Cambourne Since the wife and I are changing cars soon, I plan to hold on to our old 'beast' and use it purely for odd-road pleasure :o Its an LWB gen2 Frontera with a 3.2 V6 :o Under the Vuaxhall badge its all Isuzu and is actually bloody capable off road (even rescued the odd landy !! ). You can pick up both the LWB and SWB quite cheap atm. Since its no longer going to be the family workhorse, I'm going to take off the side-steps and stick a 2" lift on it :o let the fun times roll Si. I'm on the look out for a 4x4 and I quite like the gen2 Frontera, is an Isuzu after all. My Vauxhall Monteray I had years ago, (another rebadged Isuzu), was incredibly reliable and fault free and it didn't lead a charmed life either. As soon as the bike is sold i'll be on the hunt and these do look good value for money and much improved over the 'old' Frontera's

Gareth0689
I have an old 1.8 petrol freelander and I would recommend it to anyone. Ive not ha any problems with it and it is comfortable on and off road and is actually very capable off road and i have oly used it with road tyres. The hill descent thing is also a good feature and is very useful.

The hill descent thing is also a good feature and is very useful. I'm not sure quite what you mean. I do some serious off road stuff and the Freelander I use at work will NOT touch even half of what I usually contemplate. It is not a proper 4 x 4 but an SUV with 4 wheel drive. The HDC is a (useful) gimmick, that in no way compensates for low ratio and can over heat the brakes quickly. Good for muddy tracks- ish. Good off road- NO WAY. Andy75
My old man's X reg can't cope with muddy hills, it's terrible. Plus he's spent about £6k on it in 5 years just to keep it on the road

Any ideas on reliability issues or how the two differ performance wise? I always found the Shogun reasonably torquey and used little if any oil between services, had 90k miles on it when was passed on and was faultless as the day when I took it on with about half that mileage. They are exactly the same, but Shoguns are exported to the UK new and Pajeros stay in Japan and usually exported when second hand. Pajeros are better specced than UK Shoguns. The 2.5 engines are from the earlier models of the Mk II, later ones such as yours had the 2.8. The 2.5s are known for weak cylinder heads and the 2.8s for weak fuel pump seals. 2.8 considered the one to go for (cash allowing). I passed my test in a 3.5 V8 FC101 landrover and drove various incarnations of series and 90/110s LRs but now can honestly say I'm a convert to the dark side of Jap motors! It is just as good as a 110 off road.
Snap Cap
I too am in the market for a 4X4, it will have to be an all rounder ie family, dog taxi and shooting and fishing. It wont have to do any heavy off roading mainly grass, dirt tracks etc. I have a choice of 3 and was wondering if you experts on here would cast a discearning eye over the 3 in the frame? 1 Mitsubishi Pajero SWB 2 Diahatsu Fourtrak 3(The wifes choice) Mitsubishi RVR. Snap Cap
Landrover are a testement to quality, this unfortunatly is reflected in thier price. The bloody things dont drop a penny despite the new 4x4 Taxes, I have a max of £1500-£2000 to spend so thats a Landy out of the equation. OldBill
1st off, how big's the family? Pajs aren't wide and Fourtracks smaller still inside. Fourtracks have an issue with tin worm as they gen on but are known for good engines (they get put in Lawn Rovers) the RVR is a toy and not a common one. I looked at a G reg county 110 and the chap would not budge below £2400- it was the best one I looked at and the rear cross member and bulkhead needed fast action to sort them out. I got my J reg LWB Paj for £1650. Mine is just a shooting bus- I should have got the SWB but I love it.

The SWB version of the Pajero would be my choice as the 7 seater is a bit on the large side as the wife will be driving it too, hence why she has gone for the RVR, we used to have a Mitsubishi Space Runner, which she loved so thats why she has chosen the RVR. We also have parking issues as in a very small drive and packed road, if it wont fit on your drive, you are taking a big risk parking it out on the road. al4x
Personally I wouldn't touch an older landrover with a bargepole. They are overpriced very unrefined on the road, drink fuel and take a lot of maintenance to keep on the road. The Shogun /Pajero is not a bad buy but the SWB you have a very small boot. The fourtrack is better if you go for the LWB Independant that is about the same size as the shogun but has a larger boot. Make sure its not rusty and it'll make a very good second car.
