steveyg
Trying an afternoon session on some barley this afternoon with Tim85 on our shared permission, do not normally shoot in the afternoon and so far I am not enjoying the waiting... I know its all about crop protection..and some fun for us but what do you prefer..?? I like like getting up at silly o'clock ,listening to the dawn chorus and with no one on the roads and enjoying the countryside ...and hopefully nailing a few ..but you never know i could get my PB this afternoon.. ALWAYS THE OPTIMIST...

JDog
If my amateur observations are anything to go by pigeons in this area at least are not starting their afternoon feed until 2pm.

cocknee
I never set up early this time of year usually try to be in the hide by about midday or a bit later and shoot through till 7 ish if the birds are still coming. This seems to be the far more productive time of day for me at least. Even in winter on rape I prefer to let the birds arrive and walk them off and out of the immediate area before setting up and hopefully they return in more manageable numbers, there is nothing like shooting into a flock of 500 pigeons to completely ruin a day. fenboy
If i had to choose I would rather shoot the afternoon than morning this time of year.
pigeon controller
Mornings can be slow and the afternoon period is mostly the better time.
tomp875
Late morning early afternoon for me this time of year, got set up at half 1 yesterday and packed up with 160 in the bag by 6 on laid barley
steveyg
arrived at 1pm at the barley field,no flightlines or decent numbers about.Even if there were birds about there was no where to set up as we would of done more damage than the pesky pigeons... Waited for an hour and nothing changed so Tim85 and myself decided to check a rape field,we walked up and 40+ took off...we waited and they came back in two's and three's and there was a slow flightline so we decided to set up. I had two shots and had two pigeons... then nothing for 30mins... We decided to head back to Tims other perm, barley had a few pigeons on it so in desperation we set up for an hour with minimal kit as its a long walk, wind was blowing nicely and a couple decoyed to the flapper. We finished on 7, 80 + miles of traveling..hey ho...harvest will soon be here

Danoi99
I went skulking around today just to see what was about. A good couple of hundred pigeons on a field adjacent to my perm. I just sat in a hedge for a bit and managed to pop off 2 that came my way. Farmer tells me that the Rape will be cut in about 10- 14 days, and the wheat a little later than that. I can't wait !!!!! This will be my first ever shoot over stubble !!
