Question for the log cutters

Wonder if any of you guys might be able to help me out? I have designed and built a Logging trestle that fills the gap between the current domestic type cheapo plastic and tin units, the knock together timber job and the investment of a proper processor. It is not the type of thing your average home log cutter might really make use of unless they were 1. well used to cutting with bigger chainsaws 2. needing to cut quite a serious amount of logs in a short time. It can be produced with practically any amount of brackets (though the minimum is 5) it could even go say 3- 6 meters. Fully loaded even a five bracket unit is capable of doing say more or less a dumpy bag of logs in one sitting, like I say more a casual pro thing

The thing that I am seriously struggling with not being involved enough in the log cutting industry is how do I market it? Are their trade associations that produce a magazine? What about specialist shows? Is there even a database of log cutters I might even locate and canvass my way through?

I have a few retailers interested however the issue is besides the five bracket start model Its basically not a one size fits all thing and they hence do not wish to buy in the quantity I require to allow them a decent margin and why should I allow them a cut / effectively a discount of the final selling price buying ones and two's a month? Twenty a time and it might be very different. 20% margin minimum to them is a heck of a marketing cost per unit at the end of the day

So anyone any ideas or suggestions on how I might go direct ?

Its nothing like a truncator other than it hinges. The load this thing takes will fill a dumpy bag in one go (like used for crane delivered sand etc) and you could not do that or cut much off straight with a truncator! like I say it is unique and its not for domestic logging other than the very extreme end of that. You could tractor load 18" diameter logs on this baby

I have done the research on product, this is a 12 month plus journey to get to this stage (indeed I had it on the drawing board even longer back than that) Were I am stuck is in finding retailers willing to stock in proper quantities, hence now wanting to go direct. Its part of a full Fabrication company I now own so I either find a better route to market or just concentrate on the Kennels and dogs boxes etc. Along with the contract one off work and rely on just having the drawings and development all done for odd one offs with little marketing effort (as it is now)

All this "product thing" comes from the days I was a coded welder earning plenty one month then sitting on my rear the next. Going back to that would be taking a 20+ year step backwards.

Are you cutting like that commercially? The smallest unit will eat a bigger load than that and more with the twistiest logs you see and stuff you cant honestly lift in by hand

Seriously guys this is a commercial heavy duty unit that comes in below a 5k investment in a proper processor, not a home thing and I am looking at marketing not design or competing with knock togthers or DIY stuff, please don't hyjack

Try Arbtalk. Forum for log cutters, some professional some just domestic with plenty in that in between area.

Thanks, I shall have a look.

The pic isn't mine it was just one of many along a similar line over on Arbtalk. More an example of what is already out there.

That particular one is at the bodgit end of the scale but there are well made versions in use too. Have to admit to only knowing of home built ones rather than commercial versions.

Good luck with it, I wasn't trying to hijack. Arbtalk is probably your best place to ask, in the Firewood section.

Its ok thanks for the tip, I know there are a few pro guys on here and just thought on. I genuinely wouldn't sell one of these to a general not really experianced domestic as they could hurt themselves, its really big saw stuff or you will get tip contact

The biggest arb show is in about 5 weeks time (APF) that would be the place to show off your kit but not sure if you've left it too late to get a stand now. Very intrested in seeing what you've come up with.

Do you want to sell the idea or the product? If it's the idea try googling Riko and give them a try.

Without giving too much away may I ask what they will retail at?

Am I right in presuming its for ringing smaller cord that doesn't require splitting or does it split to? Does it self load the bags.

I'm excited please keep me informed, if the price was right I'd be intrested in buying one.

Clark's at parkgate are now a fairly good shop/internet thing or even Jas P Wilson at dalbeattie sells forestry machines. Look in the FMJ and u will get a host of companies selling firewood type stuff. Either that or take an advert in FMJ urself and sell it direct?

The problem u will probably have is both the above and most forestry type agents usually also double as welding/fabricating yards so could possibly 'steal/modify' ur design althou possibly they could produce it under licence?

If u go along to the APF u will get an idea of wots on market (althou sounds like u already know that) and who's selling wot so how to approach to sell it
