Our plan for this year is blackberry wine, elderberry wine, an elderberry and grape table wine and also some sloe gin and cranberry spice vodka. Whilst out shooting today I also found two huge plum trees, one with yellow fruit and one with dark fruit. My father in law dropped off a shed load of huge courgettes the other day so will make a batch out of that. Ive also been handed a bucket full of honey 'cappings' that will need to be processes into mead. Recently bottled some of last years cider and just drinking some now. Not up to my usual standards but still drinkable. I have vowed not to make any more strawberry vodka because I guzzle it way too fast. Made damson gin last year, nice but not so nice that i swig over half a litre a night. Kes Posted August 19, 2014 Report Share Posted August 19, 2014 We used to have a plum tree which was called the yellow egg plum - yellow when ripe it seemed like a variety of greengage, tasting, as said, is the only way. I'm making Victoria plum wine and jam and probably late damson. Very satisfying to be able to eat and drink them during winter with a bit of brandy for the wine and fireside toast for the jam ! Also need to go out and get some more elderberries this week but we ran out of time. norfolk dumpling Posted August 22, 2014 Report Share Posted August 22, 2014 A really good year for fruit - SWMBO picked several pound of victoria plums yesterday. Not sure where they are going as freezer is heaving with cherries, black currants, blackberries (cultivated), mirabelles. Jam making in full swing! Spotted a big tree of damsons (not quite ready) which are my favourite tipple with gin. Strange outcome with frozen damsons - tasted wonderful but it was a pale pink. Looked spectacular in a clear bottle. Mirabelles used for a new jam spotted on Google; chilli plus brandy. Tasted wonderful at the cooking stage but got to mature for a month. On the non-alcoholic front SWMBO made several litres of elderflower cordial - wow! This has been my preferred soft drink this summer. We are cutting down on booze so a nice substitute for a beer in the afternoon and I suspect quite good for you. It's like 'The good life' here - must fish another joint of venison out of the freezer - Chinese Water deer. Possibly the best venison you can get. I also had some blackberry wine last year that stopped fermenting way too early (my fault) so i have just put some new yeast in and it has kick started again. Hopefully will be ok but worth a shot anyways Also just started our sloe gin, elderberry gin and elderberry vodka. The sloes we picked a bit early this year but hopefully should be ok. rtaylor Posted October 9, 2014 Report Share Posted October 9, 2014 I made some gorse flower wine this year. Pretty dry but that's how I like white wine. Nice on a hot afternoon, not that there is many of them left this year. I did make some nettle beer but it wasn't that great and I won't bother again.
