New Shotgun Certificate - Kent.

Hi Chaps, I found this forum pretty useful when applying for my new shotgun certificate from Kent Police so I thought i'd add my experience to the pot in the hope that someone else might find it useful...

28/6/14 - Sent my application with £50 cheque / photos.

18/7/14 - Having not heard anything about my application I sent a email to the firearms team email address along the lines of.... "not head anything for a few weeks, any chance of an update?". received a prompt reply along the lines of.... "Unfortunately there are large delays but your application has been received, you will be contacted shortly".

28/7/14 - Got a call from the FEO, had a brief chat about when the best time to visit would be, he offered to visit that week, but I wasn't around due to work commitments so we agreed on a visit the following week. he asked me a couple of questions about my experience of shooting and my referee but nothing in depth.

4/8/14 - FEO came to inspect my house., first off he had a look at my cabinet, he wasn’t over the moon about the fixing of a cabinet to a stud wall. But accepted that it was located in the most suitable location in the house and advised he would approve but recommended that I investigated a more secure method of securing it to the fabric of the building, i.e. specialist fixtures suitable for the modern construction methods that have been used in my house.

Had a good look around my property and noted all the security features, locks, alarms etc.

Had a brief chat about my current health, stress at work, and asked about any history of medical /mental health issues.

Asked about my what I wanted a shotgun for and my experience of shooting (15+ yrs clay shooting with family and friends)

Asked a couple of shotgun safety questions ( I’d recommend reading the BASC shotgun safety document if you are new to shooting ).

Then had a bit of a chat about what I would be looking to buy and also about keeping the key to the cabinet secure, Recommended leaving a spare key with my solicitor!

He said he had tried to call my referee with no joy, I informed him that the referee is on holiday and would return the following week, so that was probably a better time to call him.

He said he couldn't see any problems and was recommend that I be approved subject to reference and GP’s approval and that it would take approximately 6 weeks to process and be delivered.

I would describe the interview as fairly relaxed.

7/8/14 - FEO called to confirm the email of the my referee as I had made a mistake on the application, he subsequently sent a mail to the referee.

14/8/14 - SGC arrived in the post with a couple of additional forms for the transfer of shotguns.

So all in it took about 10 weeks, probably could have got through the process a bit quicker by contacting them earlier and by my referee not going away for a couple weeks but all in all it was fairly straight forward.
