Last Saturday found me again searching for my first fallow of the season, and taking advantage of the nice weather.

Started stalking early morning around a few patches of woodland with some beautiful meadows in between, along a nice stream, hoping to find fallows feeding in the open. After only half an hour we spotted two red silhouettes at the edge of a meadow, at about 350 yards. A quick scan trough the binos revealed there were two good size roe does, so continued stalking along the stream, but 2 hours later still no sign of the fallows i was after.

Decided to take a break and have some breakfast and a change of tactic and location found us stalking a thick woodland with some freshly cut wheat fields in the middle. At this point the stalking became difficult, as the wind direction was changing every few minutes, but we found some very fresh slots indicating that the fallows were heading away and started following the tracks, stopping every few meters, glassing around and listening. After another hour the fresh slots led us on the edge of one of the fields and as we approached the clearing spotted another roe doe at only about 20 yards in front of us. A cock pheasant broke the silence and the roe made a run for it, stopping at about 150 yards to look back.

We headed back in the woods and started following another set of fresh slots, which eventually led us to another field with a belt of thick shrubs and ferns on the edge. We approached carefully the opening and took cover behind the ferns and before we had the chance to reach the binos, bingo! A fallow doe was feeding in the field folowed by a very good size pricket, and couple of more does sitting in the shade. Set up the sticks quickly and at this point the pricket was about 60 yards from us. Rifle on the sticks and took aim at the pricket... all i need it was to wait for it to stop and turn broaside as it was quartering towards me... After a few more seconds it did, and the .270 Barnes TSX struck home, exactly where i want it... The pricked stood still for a second and tried to run, but after only 10-15 yards it fell dead at the edge of the field.

The beauty of the land, quality of the animals seen and the challenging stalking, made from this day a truly memorable one!
