where to put the magent

Generally away from the killing patch, even on days when the whirly works they can still really spook birds when they get right up close to it so it's best to have it in the most visible place that is also still a fair ways away from the main bulk of decoys. This way although it does the job of catching their eyes initially, their main path into the decoys should allow you a shot before they get too close to the whirly.

I rarely use my magnet I was wondering where do you put it in the L and V pattern?

The best letter to use in the A-Z of patterns is R..........for random.

To far out and birds will drift out around it...to close in will leave them very little room to come inside it....

I prefer a 1/4 wind with the rotary out 25 yards and the decoys 20/25 yards as then the birds coming in are around 30 yards.

As the pattern fills up then the pattern gets deeper so the birds land further out....

You need to balance it with the round and choke you use...

If the wind is on my right, then the machine goes on the right, as a rough rule of thumb the birds will come in to the wind from the left.....

I like to use mine close to the hide simply because although they can draw birds from a distance, they can also make birds flare at close range. If the magnet is close to the hide the bird is well within range if it flares.

I also like to position the magnet slightly upwind for the reason TEH points out.

Remember the magnet is not a magic tool, some days it will work and others it won't, keep ringing the changes and trying different things.

Are they worth the expence ? I've never used one but it seems a lot of shooters do, are they better than flappers ? been toying with the idea for ages but one friend says he leaves his in the house now and see's no difference in the bag total but does use a pair of flappers in with the decoys which is the comma pattern by the way.

I would say they are worth getting , there is nothing wrong with the cheaper models , so don't get dragged into the more ££ is better rubbish , I have pinewoods and a lesser type , they both do the job , just bear in mind they are not the " be all and end all " there is NO just one bit of kit that does everything ,

being successful in your pigeon shooting is more about options , and sometimes the more options you have the better chance of turning your day around .
