mexican bob
Stolen from Bill Hanus' website BillHanusBirdguns "Cleaning a gun isn't exactly rocket science, but the first and maybe most important (and certainly with the most potential for trouble) is the hinging or pivoting mechanism of the gun. There several brands of hinge pin grease and all, as far as I know, work well. So does Vaseline. The major problem with all these lubes is they attract grit, which can gall the critical metal mating surfaces and lead to the early demise of any double gun. You don't have to be in Iraq to have grit. Did you ever inspect the bottom seam in the pocket of your hunting jacket where you carry your shells? It's easy to pick up all kinds of junk along with shells and dump it in the open breech of your gun. Hinge pin grease is a grit magnet, which needs to be removed and replaced when you clean your gun. A common gun cleaning procedure involves spray can lubricants and/or cleaners. Maybe they are convenient and easy to use, but not without downside risks. When the carrier aerosol gas evaporates, the gunky residue becomes another grit magnet. Grit magnets attract and hold brass and plastic shavings from ejectors, unburned powder, weed seeds, dust, sand, feathers and #9 shot that's leaked out of one of my hand loads. Get the gunk out of your gun. Use a toothbrush, Q-tips, toothpicks and lots of rags. Being picky when cleaning your gun is a good habit to get into." A Sick Old Man
I think Coup132 meant Napier Gun Grease which is not bad stuff, it contains that VP90 gear. I apply a thin smear using a small paint brush to the lumps of my 12g, it has a bit more staying power than oil. See the link http://www.napieruk.com/airgun_products.html#clean5
pin
Whatever you use, use it very sparingly. You don't need to be able to see it to know its working for you, a thin film is all that is required with modern greases.

Lord Geordie
I use Lithium based grease (same you use in wheel bearings on a car) Costs about £3 for a tub that will last you 10 years As they say only grease the hinges and the tips of the activators etc and use oil for the extractors etc. I am a fanatic and clean my gun after every time i use it to remove the grease and re grease the hinges and activators etc. Also when you clean the barrel down (externally) get some GOOD silicone based spray oil OR the Leglia (spelling?) oil and make sure you get some ON and UNDER the rib If a gun is looked after it can last a lifetime LG
the last engineer
i used to be a fanatic LG, the novelty wore off real fast, hence the use of dry lubes and two major cleans a year per gun, as to the chokes ivefound that through the year either my shooting has improoved or ,my mods have become fulls with the plastic, i cant stand grease on a gun, i hate it, as mexican Bob posted the script of bill hanus, its a grit magnet, yes i agree "if you clean it will run", i dont like cleaning that many guns, lazy *** i know.
