Harnser
I have been shooting two barley stubble fields that hundreds of pigeons have been feeding on . Both fields have been sprayed off to over winter and will be sugar beet next spring . What I cannot understand is that there is no feed at all on the fields . I have had a good look over the fields and cannot see any thing that might attract pigeons . My first thought was they were after chick weed or some other weed growth . There is no weed growth what so ever and no grain on the field . The field is clean as whistle . The only thing that I can see is the fields have a fairly large growth of moss down very close to the ground and only just poking through . Has any body else experienced this ,do pigeons eat moss ? I am puzzled. Harnser
TIGHTCHOKE
I don't know, shoot a few and open their crops!
Catamong
Yes, I suppose if you leave the field alone then ambush a few as they are leaving the field mid / late afternoon you'll find out soon enough what they've been eating..? I doubt whether it's moss though..? Cat

I will try and shoot some later in the day and see what they have been feeding on . Harnser Edited October 24, 2014 by Harnser
kitchrat
Can you actually see them feeding? I know you have bad weather in the UK, (I'm in Canda right now) sometimes they just rest up in, say, a ploughed field when the wind would make it difficult to sit in the trees?? JDog
If they have been eating beech mast they may be looking for grit to aid the chomping up of the mast in their gizzard.
