I don't know quite how you got the impression that I'm somehow pretending that we're talking "about the ancient past". Far from it - I'm sure you're well aware that the remnants of the British Empire were stll tottering along yars after the conclusion of World war 2.

Anyway, I didn't realise that there was a convenient time-bar on national conscience and guilt. If there is, I assume it falls neatly between the Boer War, when we introduced concentration camps, and World War 1, when we British fought the Germans "with God on our side", and were surprised to find that our adversaries had had the same belief instilled in them!

And as for "losing the Empire", well, when you take the time to study how we gained, exploited and retained it there's a great deal to be less than proud of.

Are you really comparing Pax Britannica to the thousand year Reich and its death camps? The British Empire was a trading entity that ended up governing by accident The Nazis wanted empty land and to exterminate anybody not in their image, but the music was nice, so let's forgive and forget. Wars were an expensive nuisance to the British and were to be avoided at all costs, whereas the Hun...

Did you grow up in an ex-Colony and have a bit of a chip, or did you grow up foreign generally and fail Cecil Rhodes' test (there's a man who knew about Empire building) or are you the left-wing historian type who bleats about the past to ease their own concious about enjoying the benefits of wealth, booty nicked from the natives and going to nice countries where they all speak English?

I like the British Museum and its displays of pilfered artefacts and most regimental messes in the British Army have wonderful booty from around the world - I particularly like KOSB and RSDG Magdala drums and the 14 Light Dragoons' golden chamber pot.

Perhaps they should feel guilty and send the lot back?

They cant be dull and nazis surely? Whilst the nazis were truly abhorrent i dont think they could ever be accused of being dull.

Apparently Herman Goering could tell a half decent knock-knock joke, but as for the rest of them they were pretty boring. Fundamentalism rarely has much of a sense of humour.

Anyone else watch the New Year Concert from Vienna on BBC2 this morning?

I'm not an officianado of classical music but I do like this concert on New Year's day. Today's concert was really good and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's once again inspired me to pick my Trumpet up, which I don't play often enough.

The first half of the programme was dedicated to science and industry and the first piece was The Perpetual Motion Polka and the conductor can decide for himself how he's going to finish the piece. A very amusing finish this time. :)

Anyone else enjoy this concert?

After the New Year's Eve Ball, I escorted Mrs B06 to the New Year's Day concert. It was excellent - even better in 'real ife' than on television. I would suggest anyone who enjoys it to make every attempt to attend one time.

Thanks Beretta,

We've added it to our bucket list. We'll put a fund to one side and then try each year to get a ticket. I can imagine the atmosphere must be astonishing.

As I say, I did like the ending the conductor gave to the Perpetual Motion Polka :good:

Wrong on every count. Have another guess or two, though! It's helping me to see what makes you tick.

Oh, and it's "conscience", by the way, not "conscious".
