The Mighty Prawn
Hi all, my Browning 525 is due some love as there was some rust on the rib which was dealt with and cold blued by the gunsmith and a horrible mark where I got duck blood on and smudged it which stripped the blue. Neither mark are particularly appealing and so I was going to get it reblued but I thought maybe something tougher as its my universal shotgun for clays through to game so gets used and abused a lot. What are people's ideas about Cerakote or similar for an o/u? Is it a terrible idea? Will I make it unsellable if I ever wanted to?
Andy135
I personally would not buy a second hand gun that had Cerakote or similar on it, simply because it would be harder to sell on in future. Plus if any rust were to form under the coating you'd not know until it got really bad, so for these reasons, I'm out.
fenboy
If your 525 is the 3.5" wildfowl model I do not think you would have a issue selling it to a fellow wildfowler if it was finished in cerakote. It is by far the best coating available and the chances of it rusting underneath should be nil if it is applied correctly. I know Muncher on here has just had his done , to improve its rust resistance while on the marsh.
The Mighty Prawn
I don't really have any plans to ever part with it although I'm sure we've all felt that until the next must have comes along so perhaps resale shouldn't be a worry. Essentially I suppose I'm just looking to get it tidied up and maybe toughened up with a coating to save some worries about getting it mucky
Westley
You are in the best area to have one of the top barrel blackers carry out the work. Wiseman's at Cannock reblued my side by side some 18 years ago at a cost of £75. The barrels are almost still as good today. I hate to think how many times that gun has been in and out of a gunslip, but it has been well looked after and cleaned correctly after use. activeviii
Ifnitz a good, expensive o/u, then I would look into reblueing. If its a keeper that will be on the foreshore a lot then cerakote. All my rifles and semi auto are cerakoted. As for rust under the micron coating then not going to happen as its bonded to the metal. No primer or base coat. If the cerakote is not bonded then it will flake off as soon as it comes out the oven. Some of the cerakoters have sorted it to look like a deep blueing but its not my cuppa. I use jay over at tactical coating for barrels. Moderators and smaller items I do my self.
