Nothing to get too excited about , but I picked 53 and lost a few , plus a few crows and rooks. The birds were late moving with me only managing to get 4 by lunch time , but the next two hours were pretty manic. My shooting was not as good as I would liked , but the birds were not that easy , with most coming into the field downwind fast , over the hedge behind me and seeing me before I saw them. They really wanted this field and even when they learnt my end was dangerous they kept pilling in to the bottom end of the field and despite scaring shots would not leave the drillings , just lifting and then dropping again within seconds. By late afternoon there were several hundred on the far end of the field and even the best decoys cant be expected to pull the birds up to my end with so many real birds feeding on the field. Well done nice bag. If you shoot it again in the next few days. Try flagging the far end of the field off. That might make a big difference. Good luck. I've found that the birds in my area have started to pair and split from the flocks so this should help to obtain better results in the next few weeks. Following an illness 18 months ago I have to pick a spot within reasonable walking distance of the car and even then it will mean 3 trips to carry all my gear to the spot as I cant carry to much weight. The far end of the field was 300 yards off with no means to get the car any closer , plus it was mid afternoon before the pigeons started to use the far end of the field and by the time I would have set up the birds would be close to finishing feeding for the day. But you are right , years ago when I was a bit fitter i would have moved . If the birds are still using the field tomorrow I may flag the far end though. Lots of drilling going on at the moment so it will be a case of driving round and see where the birds are working before setting up. While not mega numbers of birds about it was good to see them in reasonable numbers some good flocks ,lots of small flocks around a dozen strong and plenty of singles and pairs.
