rabbiter
this morning I headed off to a permission ive just got back, had the shooting on here years ago,its a big sheep farm.Got there for 5.30am,it was just light enough to see,so headed off up the field walking alongside a line of gorse, when I spotted what I think was a hare,in the low light.Got to the higher point of the field, and there was Charlie mooching about, set up the trigger sticks and had him in my sights,he was backside to me,so couldn't take the shot,i gave a squeak but he just turned his head in my direction, still didn't want to take the shot, then he just disappeared.I could hear the crows and magpies going mad,so I tried to catch up with him,to no avail.walked on a bit nd put out the gc500,called for around 20 minutes, and nothing came,so carried on.Next field I put out the caller again, all that came along was a roe doe, hotly pursued by a buck, not 15 yards from where I stood in the gorse, was a great sight to see.Carried on for a little while, then decided to turn back as nature had properly woken up,and thought my chances of a fox were slim.So heading back the same way as I came,i spotted a fox just disappearing into the gorse,so I dropped to my knees, set the rifle on the sticks,i expected it to come out a bit nearer to where I waited, but after around 10 minutes it appeared further down the field.A quick ping with the rangefinder said it was 247 yards away,i was in a good position and felt confident,so I took the shot, sending a 50gn gamehead to greet it,the fox jumped in the air and ran for 60 yards then dropped,my bullet found its mark, the fox turned out to be a huge baron vixen,so it was well worth the 40 minute trip, one less to worry about up there............
