Hoges
I was asked by a local farmer to shoot over some of his pea crop, So did a recce the day before limited choice of where to shoot from with roads on two side of a triangle of small fields. I set up next day near a tree they were sitting in the day before with a motley collection of decoys and two floaters in a light westerly, (no magnet is this my first mistake?) Only saw 4 birds all afternoon 2 at right angles over the top of me not enough time for a shot and only one came to the decoys. One shot all afternoon. I suspect the land is shot over quite a lot. Do I need a decent wind to make an outing worthwhile, and what about a magnet, should I get one? There was a small flock on one of the fields today 15 birds or so. They flew off as soon as I stopped the car 100 yards off. All advice welcome. Ta Hoges
kyska
It's difficult to say, did you have any pigeon 'traffic' above you and they wouldn't decoy, or did you not see any birds at all? The magnet argument will go on for an age, I use them, they work, but arnt essential, if you're under a flight line a hand full of deeks should work. There seemed to be a reasonable flight line the day before but on the day only say 4 birds?
kitchrat
There seemed to be a reasonable flight line the day before but on the day only say 4 birds? If you only saw 4 birds all afternoon, they must have been elsewhere! However, to find where that is and get permission is difficult, them they move off again!! But that's the challenge, isn't it? Otherwise we'd all shoot clays, which you can predict.
pigeon controller
If you have birds down and you watch and none join then you have to guess which way they will approach your set up , usually in to wind. If you have a number down and walk them off see where they come in from and prefer to land or which tree they sit in , then make your decision . If none return move on and find them. What time of day did the farmer see them down , it may be they are feeding late and your setting up too early. You have to be there when the birds are , which may only be a a small window of one or two hours. Good Luck.
yickdaz
it has to worth setting up in the first place, decent flightline and decent amount of birds there, if there's hardly any around your not going to shoot many, not having a go just constructive criticism

I hardly ever go on a field unless I have looked the day before and at the time I expect pigeons to be active, which this time of the year is from around 2pm till later on during the day . So spend more time out of the hide , looking and learning and you find it will pay dividends when you are in a hide . Good luck .
