oldypigeonpopper
hello, reference my post on shotty/FAC application i have decided on buying a 12guage ARMSAN SEMI AUTO and a CZ455 AMERICAN SYNTHETIC .22 LR so i contacted 6 gun shops within 20 miles of south oxon 4 by phone 1 by email 1 by going to shop with a view to purchase together with scope/mod/ammo/cartridges and a few other bits and maybe a S/H O/U, 3 did not bother to get back to me/ no return with the email that leaves 2 the one i phoned got back and few hours later and gave me an idea of total cost, the shop i went to look at a few semi autos and rifles were very good but having looked on the importers web site saying had some in stock of a phenoma in camo had none in stock!!!!!!,the CZ 455 could be ordered ok. so it looks like i might have to go with a 612 in camo and i was quoted £450 when i see other shops on gun trader doing for £385 and the CZ rifle quoted £450 when another one in same county doing for £350. should i just wait for my permits and find the best deal when i shall be spending over a £1,000? ? ? Carman06
My local RFD is a little behind in technology and doesn't do email etc. they will however always pick up the phone and remember the price you pay for something is not just the item but the aftercare too. I know I could get some of my stuff cheaper else where but the service from my RFD is second to none. Also take note some items that are cheap are grey imports and as such the warrenty is very hard to claim on. you can't do anything until your tickets arrive anyway not even put a deposit on a rifle (legally). Visit the shops several times to get a feel for how they are with customers after all I know some that are really nice till they have your money then they don't want to know. marnold
In general, I have found buying from gunshops quite troublesome!! It seems that most of the gun shops near me are either not interested in my business, or couldn't really care less about the customer service they provide. I used to frequent a shop that used to patronise me something awful, slam any requests I made if it wasn't something he wanted to sell and try to make me feel stupid and was downright rude, but his ammo prices were good and it was close to home so I continued to use him. That was until I bought a new Anschutz off of him with a match trigger fitted to it (a factory fitted option) that would bump fire something awful with only the slightest tap and it had also made the safety mechanism faulty. After 3 attempts of giving the rifle back trying to get the problem fixed, I asked for the original trigger to be put back on as the importer obviously couldn't fit it correctly and I wasn't going to risk it or put a single round through it until it was safe. Had the original trigger put back on eventually after 6 MONTHS and he wouldn't refund me for the trigger that they couldn't fit!!! Downright dangerous and disgusting if you ask me!! I threatened with trading standards and his reply was 'go for it, I could do with a good laugh and it's been a while since I was last in trouble with them'! Appalling. Needless to say he has never had another penny from me and I now have a 50 mile round trip for ammo. Doh!
Gordon R
I feel sorry for people in other parts of the country. In the Northwest we have Bamfords, McAvoys and Malmo. Malmo is the pick, but all are excellent.

Had this with a brand new Hatsan semi auto ( the new one everyone said was ok) it was firing carts when the carrier slammed back.It went back once, fair enough but came back exactly the same. Was getting know where with the RDF ( once they had their cash they simply didn't want to know) Some one on here mention the not fit for purpose act which I writ out on the back of my had, simply sat outside said RDF till there was a few customers in and then went in very loud quoting said reference.Had cash in hand within 10 mins. Carman06
My nearest RFD is a bit like your experience marnold. He's only been around for a year or two and when I first went in he basically had the attitude if it wasn't something he was interested in then he couldn't see why anybody would be. For eg when I asked if he ever got dual calibre rifles such as .22LR and .410 shotgun he said " no I would either can see the use for them". He is very cheap but after speaking to him a few times he showed how little he actually knew of the firearms act and what is and isn't lawful even denying it when shown to him in black and white. Needless to say I don't use him for anything even if he is literally less then 2 miles away.( there are 3 more within 20 miles none I would use) I did however find a fantastic RFD about 25 miles away but so helpful and no pressure selling. Been in business for nearly 30 years and although not the cheapest for something's I confidently know any issues and they would fix it straight away even if means them making a loss. It's the kind of place you can just drop in for a chat and brew no questions asked. I generally have people I trust with certain jobs like I only use one builder, plumber & electrician etc. The RFD is no different in my opinion. marnold
I think a lot of these RFD's could do with a lesson in customer service and would do well to realise that each persons requirements are different, therefore there is no room for belittling when a non standard request is made. Saying that, I also understand that the licensing system in place in the UK must make it difficult for small RFD's to hold a lot of 'uncommon stock' that wouldn't meet the common demands of a vast majority of licence holders.
