Cyrus1988
Hey guys, Finally got some new 3" cheddite cases so starting loading again on the MEC sizemaster. I was finding that the final crimp was looking a bit rubbish, as you'll see in the photos below. I did a quick search on good old pigeon watch and found a thread from a couple of years ago on the same issue. What people were saying is that the plastic crimp starter on the MEC is all well and good for used cases which have already been crimped but for new cases they don't really 'cut' that well. I then quickly went and loaded a cartridge but used the pre-crimp station on the Lee Load-All, what a difference! The cartridge on the left is with the MEC crimp starter and the cartridge on the right is the Lee. (sorry about the quality, you can see what I mean still) So after a quick look online I found Clay & Game sell this: http://claygame.co.uk/products/detail/brass-crimp-starter Has anyone bought one? How did you get on with it? Or is there something else out there that's a bit cheaper? Cheers.
motty
I bought one of those super crown crimp starters. Maybe I was using it incorrectly, but all mine did was cut and split the mouth of the new cases (very sharp). My mec steelmasters seem to pre-crimp new cases well enough so as to look good, as long as they are used in conjunction with a Gaep finisher. By the way, I think both the shells in the picture look fine. Edited July 2, 2015 by motty
Richie10
I use one, seems to work fine for me. Get crimps like the one on the right, but even the one of the left looks fine as Motty said.
fenboy
Nothing much wrong with either , you may well find the the problem is more to do with the crimp finisher , if you move the cam slightly it should do away with that slight swirl , I had the same issue and thatb is how I resolved it , as motty says my crimp starter seems fine on new cases. wigeon jim
I found that if you hold the crimp starter down on the case for a few seconds it sets fine, Jim.
MAB1954
I have one of those super crown crimp starters and it will cut the new case, normally just use the plastic MEC crimp starter now. Both of your crimps look ok to me.
