deny essex
Checked out one of my local permissions Thursday while takeing her indoors out for the afternoon. The farmer had been harvesting his large pea field and had done a small part of it right in front of one of my favourite spots to shoot from, the pigeon were buzzing around and sitting on wire's anticipating a feed as the harvester went up and down. I checked again on the way home after keeping the mrs happy with afternoon tea and nosh at Burnham, he had only finished a little more harvesting but a nice sized area to shoot. After morning chores on friday I set off car loaded for an afternoons shooting, the first since about Febuary. The harvester was not operating but the farmer was cutting back the field margin of grass and weed , that was just after I had driven the perimeter of four foot grass and weed covering the car and air intakes with seed. I set up in a dry shallow ditch with a hedge and tree line at my back, not the most comfortable of places but lowers the hide profile and I know often has a regular flight line. The wind was blowing and gusting very strong , so much so that when I set the rotary up with hypaflaps it rotated before I could set the battery up and un-wound the arms which flopped to the deck!, a bit miffed I turned off the power and put the arms back on, turn the power on nothing , What the **** now, I had trod on the lead and seperated lead from connector, a quick wire twist and that was sorted. Well once as comfortable as I could get in the hide and the layout set I sat back , it was not more than a couple of minutes before the first pigeon arrived for a look see, that was number one , the flight line was on but my shooting was off and the birds were reluctant to decoy, but I did drop some high and long shots which pleased me after so long not shooting, so after altering the pattern several times and moving the decoys in much closer than the rotary they began to decoy better. My shooting was a little up and down to say the least but as the afternoon wore on the birds increased and gave me more practice. I ended the afternoon with 32 in the bag and 11 not picked which fell into an adjacent farm wheat field and an un-harvested pea field, not a big bag but a most enjoyable afternoon after a long lay off.
