dear simon,

this is my interpretation of what he said when i asked what he ended up doing,

first of all he said the gear under the fuel pump was to proud.cant hear the recording that well but he said some thing about a sprocket with 8 different positions it can go in and that he had to find out which was the right one, and that the position was a mile out.it was also injecting at the right time relative to where the crank was but the valves were opening and shutting at the wrong time relative to the crank which ****** it all up.so when he got the cam right it made the pump wrong, so then he sorted out the pump, and thats about all he said really, hope this makes more sense to you than me, and i hope you can also tell me along with sorting the butterfly valve out, putting a new charge light bulb holder in that it adds up to a 12 hour job :hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm::unhappy::unhappy:

timing those engines are a 100% ********....................what he says is exactly what i said in the first place.................the easiest way to do it is

  1. take the rad out...front of L/Rover....and timing case etc
  2. DO THE BLOODY THING BEFORE YOU HAVE PUT IT TOGETHER....REMEMBER ????..:lol:

the injector pump runs off and 8 tooth sprocket meshed with the cam........the pump drive fits into a slot on the drive gear...........soooo......timing at the front needs to be perfect the crank is timed with the cam.......then the pump gear needs to be lifted out and turned until the pump meshes with the gear and is midway on the adjustment marks...the pump cover needs to come off and a locking pin needs to be installed for this to happen....................

£612 quid is much less than what you would pay for down here..................if you had called him across when the engine was in the chassis......he would have charged you £200 quid maybe.............

anyway jobs done and the best thing now is to take her for a 30 mile gentle run ...and she will be running like a sewing machine.....well done.... :good::good:

the reason the pump appeared "too proud" is because there was properly the spacer plate missing twixt the pump and block....i dont have one as the throttle quadrant plate is the spacer plate on mine............

my mate came round after work today, took bonni for a spin a few mile down the road as id booked another fake mot :ninja:

went well in 1st 2nd and third as it did before but 4th was better than before but still didnt pick up speed as well as i think it should and it was making a bit of noise,

brakes were still not good so took it back home and fiddled with the brakes and it seemed sorted in the garage so took it out again, this time it went even better, my mate said that the back brakes were binding before as they were both red hot, now they were all on, it just pulled to the right slightly under braking, but none of the wheels have been balanced yet,and it smoked a bit for the first mile or 2 but not a fraction on like it was last week.over all i was pleased,so far, so its now booked in for its MOT tomorrow morning at 9.30am, wish us luck :good::good::good::good:

i cant see the words "happy" and "brakes" been used in any sentence together i have to say :lol:

I had problems with blue box brake shoes, fitted some Mintex, problem solved.

for the ease of things im more than willing to just buy everything new, but will let my mate have another look before i do that :good::good:

well as expected, it failed, but it was a good fact finding mission.

1, windscreen wiper not working......****** thing worked yesterday

2, rear fog light not working......****** thing worked yesterday

intermediate drop arm insecure,.........steering relay that comes through bottom of chassis had play in it, have since found out there should be retaining plate on it, ordered :good:

3.service brake is causing the steering wheel to severely pull one way.........not that i noticed.......****

4. servce brake is causing vehicle to swerve to the O/S........id say pull not swerve.

advisorys.

play in front and center universal joints.

not to bad i guess :good::good:

now for the wipers, i think iv worked out whats happened, when i tried them in the MOT center they worked for one second then they stopped, it seems like one had come off the window and gone down under the windscreen lip, when i was looking at them a bit ago one went what i presume to be the right was and the other tried to go down, am i right in thinking from the rest position they both swing out wards from the middle :hmm::hmm:

also stopped some of the vibrating and rattling at the front end, put the wing stays on, and put an extra nut and bolt through the steering box cover as that was going like a good un :lol:

You have my sympathy.

I don't do as much with cars as I used to do, but changed an alternator on a Suzuki Swift yesterday for a mate. Wheel off for access to lower pivot bolt. Three plastic plugs, one bolt - lower engine cover removed. One earth strap, one electrical connection, pivot bolt, tensioner arm bolt (pivot), tensioner arm bolt removed - job sorted. What could be easier?

Next step - remove drive shaft. One of the worst designs I have ever come across. It is almost made deliberately hard.

It's all good fun.

i see your point mike, id never even thought about that when posting pictures and especially of the views from my windows and stuff, garage is well secure, it it lifts an inch then its all bells lights and whistles, and if its whilst im in then im 90 seconds from having the shot gun out to defend myself and property :good::good:

so rear for light working fine, managed to find my old fixing plate for the steering relay, knew id seen it somewhere, so thats all cleaned up, painted and fit, wipers are still not right and i cant work them out, one is correct but the other is up vertical and goes down and back up, whilst the other is starting where it should and finishing where it should, if i put the other one in its correct start position it would swing down instead of up :hmm::hmm:

so just need brakes sorting now, my mate may be coming round today at some point :good::good::good:
