Hard work today

Had a text from Motty Sunday saying he had found good numbers on some rape stubble and would I like to join him Tuesday for a go at them.

Motty had another look Monday to make sure the field was not being shot , and reported back that there were a lot of birds about .

We met up at 8.30 to ensure no one beat us to the field and stood and watched for a good while before deciding where to go , there was the odd bird visiting but we were confident traffic would increase as the day went on .

We elected to shoot from two separate hides about 30 yards or so apart set up in a shallow dyke , we put out a pattern between us consisting of dead birds and plastics along with a magnet just out from each hide.

It was not to long before Motty had the first bird in the bag , while I managed to miss my first few chances , Motty seemed to be shooting well and took some cracking high birds while I still struggled to find any consistency .

It became clear the pigeon were not really committing so we moved the two magnets over the dyke so they were about 20 yards behind and between the hides this seemed to have some effect and birds started to come in with more confidence , things were very slow though with periods of inactivity followed by little flurries of birds .

My shooting came together a little towards the end but we both struggled at times , if we had shot better we may have scraped a ton but as it was we ended with a nice bag of 81 pigeon 2 crows and a collard dove.

All the birds today were shot with steel .

Sorry no pics , some numpty forgot to take one of the bag (Me)

Thanks for the invite motty

Interesting account of a day in the Fens , You both do well to fit in your shooting and everything else , what with your dogs , work and keeping the other half happy , I don't know how you find time , but as they say , if theres something you want to do you make time .

I envy you doing a whole day , I now find a half day is enough , but I normally go 3 or 4 times a week so you can say I go two full days a week

Apart from the price you get for steel shot pigeons is there any other advantage of using steel ? . One of the members I took out the other week was using steel and I didn't think he shot as well as when he came with me using lead.

While we can use lead I will stick it , but if there were other benefits using steel then I might consider giving it a go .

It is unusual for me to do a full day , I mostly like to be set up for dinner this time of year , sometimes when you share farms with other guns though you need to ensure you are first there !

To be honest I have not done as much shooting as I would like this harvest as i have had no numbers of birds to go at most of the time , fortunately motty and muncher help me out with an invite now and again , the lack of shooting is having a effect on my ability to hit the target though .

There is no benefit to using steel really other than the price I can get per bird , it also means I can sell the odd crow that we shoot rather than waste them .

All the birds we shot yesterday were collected and paid for within a hour of me getting home.

I'm not sure that this ever happens.

Nope , I trained mine from a young age that I would be absent for long periods .

She got her own back by giving birth on the 1st September , I am still reminded to this day that I was looking out of the hospital window saying it looked like a nice moon for some shooting
