Will H
Hi all - looking for some advice... I've just acquired a Browning Ultra Xs with adjustable stock at rather a good price! However there is what appears to be some oil penetration on the right hand side of the stock where it meets the action (dark areas in pic). This seems to have caused two very small hairline cracks in the wood no more than 10mm in length. So I’m wondering what (if anything) I should do about this, as I would hate for the cracks to get any worse. Any opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated! B25Modelman
Might be worth dropping the action out of the stock and looking on the inside. This is precisely why I store my guns muzzle down.
Scully
I think you need professional advice, and I believe there are some professionals on here. I think the damage is caused by a mixture of over oiling and storing the gun barrels up, so the excess oil will slowly seep to the back of the action and leech into the wood. The staining may well be more apparent on the interior. Take it to a specialist is my advice.
welshwarrior
Oil has leached into the wood this will soften the wood over time and lead crack (or more cracks) the head of the stock needs degreasing. The crack also need to be assessed by someone who knows what their looking at and repaired as required.

bruno22rf
Speak to demonwolf444 on this site-you can post the stock and action quite legally and I'm guessing that the oil will need removing (Chalk dust and Meths is supposed to be good) before a high strength adhesive is forced into the crack-James (demonwolf444) is the best man I know by far to do the job.
